RPGaDay2024 in August - August 5th: Writing

Aug 05, 2024 15:11

We continue on today with #RPGaDay2024 for August.

Day 5 - RPG with great writing

This question is a bit difficult for me. My work in the past, both writing and editing in the rpg industry, means that I'm a little biased about the subject. Bad writing in a roleplaying game just annoys me; bad editing in a roleplaying game not only annoys me, but it takes me out of the game narrative and material in a big way. I can't say that there were a lot of rpgs back in the 1970s through 1990s that impressed me with their writing, but there is one game in the last few years that jumps out in my mind in this regard.

The Capharnaüm - The Tales of the Dragon-Marked RPG stands out in terms of its writing (granted that it's a French rpg that has been translated into English), both in terms of its relatively error-free text but also because of its prose. The game is a fantasy roleplaying game inspired by the One Thousand and One Nights (among other sources), and has the flowery, lyrical and poetic writing style to it, as well as the same stylistic feel that the Arabian Nights tales themselves have, and immerses the reader in the game setting and the rules very well in this regard. Not perfect, of course, since no roleplaying is, but quite superb and an enjoyably large read.

And there you have it, my thoughts on this fifth day of #RPGaDay for August, 2024.

Comments, thoughts, questions, etc. are all welcome, of course. :)
