We continue on today with #RPGaDay2023 for August.
Day 17 - Funniest Game you've played
Tough question for me. I haven't run a horror roleplaying games in some time (though I do run urban fantasy rpgs) and most of the games that I run always tend towards the more normal ratio of serious vs. humour. That said, I'm not a fan of (actual) horror rpgs, so... Humour in roleplaying games is not something that can be forced, it tends to emerge and happen...when it does... And you roll with it. Situational or circumstantial humour in a roleplaying game really is about spontaneity and reacting in the moment, rather than being a plotted out response. And if I really start laughing out loud at something, I'm likely to reward the player and their character using whatever mechanism the game uses for rewards.
That said, I find that a lot of roleplaying games aimed at younger audiences tend to have a stronger humour element to them, and have run a few of them over the years. (Not naming names here, but if you want to know more ask me in the Comments beow or elsewhere.) And my gaming groups have played both Paranoia and the Pacesetter Games edition of the Chill RPG, both of which had some built-in humourous elements that the players really liked in both those games.
And there you have it, my thoughts on this seventeenth day of #RPGaDay for August, 2023.
Comments, thoughts, questions, etc. are all welcome, of course. :)
