The CanGames That Isn't III

May 20, 2022 13:59

Today, May 20th, the start of the Victoria Day weekend here in Canada, would have been the first day of the local CanGames gaming convention here in Ottawa for 2022.

Sadly, of course, that will not be the case due to the COVID-19 pandemic, now in its sixth wave, that continues to plague the world still. The CanGames staff decided to postpone/cancel this year's edition of the convention once more, a decision that I fully agree with despite the vaccination rates and status here in Ottawa. While I don't know if the Rideau Curling Club is (still) shut down at the moment and whether any work has been done at the curling club to meet health requirements during the pandemic, the venue really doesn't offer the safest conditions for a gaming convention due to its size and available space that would make me comfortable attending the convention (if it were going on) to be honest, so the CanGames staff made the right decision to cancel the convention for this year once more.

If CanGames 2022 had been happening this weekend, I would have been attending the convention and would have been running several games. I would have run two sessions of the Atlantis: The Second Age fantasy roleplaying game of Antediluvian sword & sorcery at the convention this year, and was planning to run one, possibly two sessions of The Troubleshooters RPG that is based on the Franco-Belgian comics as well. I've enjoyed both game systems a lot over the past while, and to be honest, the two games offer a good distraction from these trying times we live in.

However, that said... To be honest, while I was quite sad to hear there would be no CanGames 2022 this year as I was quite looking forward to it, I wasn't surprised. That said, CanGames needs all the help it can get. It is a small gaming convention that doesn't do as much advertising as it should, and needs to bring more attention to itself so as to keep the eyes of the gaming world on itself, and attract and bring more people in to attend it. But more importantly, I firmly believe that CanGames has outgrown the Curling Club venue that it's based at, and needs a new, more airy, tidier, food friendly place as a venue.

In the meantime, to all my gamer friends out there, be safe and be healthy. And I'll see you at CanGames 2023! :)
