We continue on with #RPGaDay2020 in August.
Day 11 - Stack
Okay...that's an interesting word prompt for the day. Hmm...
I'll offer up two thoughts on this one.
My first thought is dice modifiers. Bonuses and penalties, whatever you want to call them. How many modifiers should you allow to stack before it gets ridiculous? Modifiers can include such things as Situational ("he's lying prone, +2 to the roll"), environmental ("it's raining heavily and the moon is obscured, offering little light, -3 penalty total"), Size ("the creature is three times your size, +3 bonus"), Ease of Task based on Skills ("you've seen this type of lock tons of times, so +2 bonus to the roll"), and...well, I could go on endlessly about categories of modifiers, though I don't think I need to for readers of this blog. :) Oh, and Wound Penalties don't count here as a modifier, per sé, as they are more along the lines of a Condition that influences the roll in my book. Personally, I feel that four (4) modifiers maximum should be allowed to a given die/dice roll. The GM should pick the most important modifiers to the roll in question, as appropriate to the situation. To be honest, I don't want to have to do massive amounts of addition and subtractions during play, especially combat, as it slows things down, but that's me. But that's just me. Four modifiers that stack together in a dice rolling situation is enough. 'Nuff said.
My second thought of the day is gaming collections and stacks of roleplaying books and products. I've got a ton of roleplaying game rulebooks and supplements and scenarios for different games in my house, but the leader of the pack has to be the materials for the old
The Dying Earth Roleplaying Game from the folks at
Pelgrane Press. I adore this game, and I bought literally everything that came out for the game. (Here's the
Dying Earth RPG Index of products that came out for the game. This game, and the various PDF products for it that I printed up takes up a very large box in my storage room. There is just a massive *stack* of material for that game. No other game takes up as much space as that roleplaying game for me.
And there you have this eleventh post for this #RPGaDay for August, 2020. Comments, thoughts, questions, etc. are all welcome, of course. :)
