Sunday Afternoon John Carter of Mars RPG Sort of Playtest

Yesterday afternoon's game session with the Sunday afternoon gaming group was pretty good, and a lot of fun. Rather than continue on with their Capharnaüm - The Tales of the Dragon-Marked campaign or switching to another system, the Sunday gamers played a one-off test session of the John Carter of Mars Roleplaying Game that allowed me to get some practice in before I run the game at CanGames 2019 in roughly 2-1/2 weeks.

Once the players showed up at my place around 1::00 pm, I explained what I planned to do with them for the afternoon, and they were pretty pleased at the idea. I had created two pre-generated characters for them to work off, a scientist and an explorer/bodyguard, and they took the characters they wanted - Tammy took the scientist, SteveR took the explorer. Again, I ran an "on a wing and a prayer" scenario, starting with a basic premise and took it from there.

The premise of the session was simple: The two characters had been sent on a scientific expedition to look into a set of ruins that were rumoured to have some ancient Barsoomian artifacts or relics. The two characters started on an airship, which was attacked, and came burning and crashing down to the surface. They took shelter in a cave of some sort, after dealing with some rock hoppers. There was a mysterious underground ruined structure that still had an active energy source. Some sort of creature with tendrils. Oh, and a banth.

As I mentioned it was a lovely, highly enjoyable session of the John Carter of Mars Roleplaying Game. I was extremely stressed and nervous about running the game, since I hadn't done so since running the Quickstart adventure at 2018's CanGames, and that was an incomplete version of the rules (that also underwent some changes before the game came out). I mucked up the intro about Barsoom somewhat, 'cause I didn't tailor it more to where the player characters were rather than about the whole darned planet, but will remember to do better at that when I run the game at CanGames this year. After running for about 20 minutes or so, I felt comfortable with the game and the mechanics, and calmed down and just enjoyed running the game and sitching the players in their situations and answering their questions as we went. Lovely stuff.

Can't wait to run the game at the convention in a couple of weeks, but am eagerly looking forward to the campaigns once I get into those with the Friday and Sunday groups. My one regret is that I don't have my Barsoom dice sets yet, as it felt weird running the game with normal d20s and d6s!
