Last night, the Friday night game continued their play of the
River of Heaven RPG campaign they've got going. Here is the write-up on that game session. You can read about the previous game session in this
journal entry. Since this post is quite long, I've put it behind a cut for those who don't want to read about the roleplaying game campaigns that I'm running.
CHARACTERS
Hendra Carpentar (Kathy) - Belt miner
Malina Arkestro (Angela) - Bodyguard
Zera Chirinos (Ellie) - Technician
Grigor Morgant (David) - Archaeologist
Sandar Kelemon (Mark) - Explorer
March 11th, 2701 AD
Sandar Kelemon tells Master Handler Reynolds that until the situation is sorted out, as there must be some sort of error, the crew of the Blue Daphne will remain with their ship, though he and Jenna Hayden-Smith, the ship's cargo master, will accompany him to the station offices to sort the matter out. Reynolds is willing, but says that he'll leave the station security force to guard the ship "just in case". Seeing no choice in the matter, Sandar acquiesces, and he, Reynolds, and Jenna depart the docks with a couple of guards for escort.
Grigor Morgant reaches the ship's entrance to the station to find it barred by several of Gardenhome Station security. He demands to leave the ship, but the guards refuse to allow this as they have their orders. Malina Arkestro arrives shortly thereafter, and learns the situation on the dockside. Grigor seems adamant about matters, but gives in when Malina points out the guards are just doing their duty. He tells her (and them) that he intends to file a protest with the Institute. He stalks back aboard the Blue Daphne and heads for the bridge. Malina reluctantly follows after him, but not before she learns from the guards what's apparently going on.
Back on Gardenhome Station, Zera Chirinos makes her way to back to the living quarters on Crew Deck 2 to say goodbye to several friends. She finds that her rival, Chazha Shenks, is waiting for her. She's heard that Zera is off to a new assignment aboard an Institute ship, and asks her who she had to sleep with to get that plum job. Tech on a research ship! Zera and Shenks have a bit of a fisticuff set-to, and the two are broken apart by Mazerin Chain, a technical shift supervisor. She admonishes both women, and while she says there's nothing she can do to punish Zera, as she's got a new assignment, she's going to put Chazha on menial technical duties for a month "so you can think about what you've done, and not do it again!" She departs, leaving the two women to dirty eye each other, and Shenks vows that she'll get Zera back for this one way or another.
On the bridge, Gardenhome Station informs Hendra Carpentar of the status of matters, snd thus that the ship's crew is confined to vessel for the moment. She's discussing the restock and resupply of the Blue Daphne with them, but they'll neither confirm nor deny when such events will occur. Hendra curses, and tells them that she'll await clarification of the situation. She begins to power down certain systems, anticipating the matter will be resolved relatively quickly.
In the Gardenhome Station Master's offices, Sandar and Jenna argue their ship's innocence against the charge of transporting illegal consumables, and learn more of the matter. The charge was laid by one Hedrin Sandhurst, the captain of the Sandhurt One, and matters become clear to Sandar. He tells Station Master Keilor and Master Handler Reynolds that Sandhurst holds several personal-related grievances against him, and that this is his way of getting back at them. Sandar agrees to let them check the cargo of the Blue Daphne to verify their cargo and claims. Keilor is not happy, stating that it's going to take valuable person-hours of the station personnel's time, but Reynolds says that it's the only way to verify Captain Kelemon's claims. Jenna heads back to the ship with Reynolds, who summons several cargo handlers to the Blue Daphne. Sandar tells Keilor that he expects himself and his crew to be compensated for their time and any cargo that might be damaged in the handling; after all, foodstuffs are perishable and time sensitive.
Ignoring protocol, the irritated Grigor enters the bridge to confront Hendra, only to find her in no mood to deal with the archaeologist's shenanigans. Malina arrives and manages to let cooler heads prevail, but she's not happy being stuck on the "tin can" with Grigor, an insult that gets Hendra somewhat hot under the collar. They are interrupted by station control informing them that Cargomaster Hayden-Smith is returning to the ship with a small group of station personnel, and that they should prepare to be boarded and inspected. Both Grigor and Hendra sense Malina's surprise and some dread at this news, but Grigor tells her that they won't find her stash. He suspects they're not looking for that. When Hendra wants to know "stash of what?", Grigor says he'll tell her later, and he and Malina leave the bridge hurriedly.
Approximately an hour later, after an intensive search of the Blue Daphne that reveals nothing illicit about her cargo or any items aboard, Station Master Keilor clears the ship and her crew for full docking privileges, and a reduction on station docking fees equal to four full days' worth. Malina breathes a sigh of relief that her illegal drugs weren't found, and is taken by surprise when Grigor reveals that he hid them for her safely in a spot where he knew they wouldn't be found! She involuntarily gives him a hug, but his stiffness makes her realise that it was a mistake.
Sandar announces to the Blue Daphne's crew that they've been cleared to depart the ship, and that docking procedures are to be obeyed in full. Restock, resupply, and refuelling are to commence immediately, so a skeleton crew will remain aboard to assist in this process. The crew's usual gathering will occur that night in The Gravitas, and there's a "whoop!" of pleasure among the ship's personnel. Everyone not remaining on the ship prepares to debark.
That night, the ship's "regulars" meet at The Gravitas, one of the better watering holes on Gardenhome Station, and Zera is there to meet her new shipmates. She seems to hit it off right away with Vaniss Taylor, the ship's only other tech, who explains to her what happened to Raynard, the last tech. Sandar explains about several of the upcoming changes to the crew roster before they head out again in three days, and introduces two other new crew personnel. The regulars have a rowdy time, much to the amusement and mortification of Zera, who compensates by engaging in several pranks, much to the amusement and chagrin of some of her new crewmates. Zera and Vaniss, along with Hendra, head back to the ship early, and the two women tell Zera that several of the others will try to get back at her for some of the stunts she pulled. Hendra tells her that she loved the dribble glasses prank, just because of the look on Grigor's face.
And that wraps up the Friday night game session of
River of Heaven. This game session went pretty smoothly, moreso than I expected given my health and stuff going on, and the players had a decent time of it, with some serious and some humourous situations involved in the session. All five players did a pretty good job roleplaying, and there are some interesting character relationships developing in the game to this point. I'm looking forward to seeing where this goes.
Hopefully, I'll be running the game again on Friday night, weather and health willing. I'm looking forward to it. :)
