Just got back from seeing Serenity. S was insistent that we see the very first showing today. I was willing to wait till the evening, but he was adamant. He is such a huge Firefly fan, and I think I've mentioned that after buying him the DVDs one Christmas, he got me hooked too. So I was very excited about this one.
I enjoyed the movie. I'm not going to give a very in-depth critique, because I haven't watched the original episodes enough, and I don't tend to do that unless I'm a really qualified fan. But I liked it a lot.
Nathan Fillion is very hot.
I really liked finally finding out what the hell Reavers actually are, and why they exist.
I was very freaked out by the scene where we find out what Reavers actually are. I thought just the suggestion of them--just hearing them in the background--was a great touch.
Jayne and Wash are still totally my favorites. There wasn't enough of them, is my only complaint, but I guess that's the price you pay when you take tv characters and move them to the big screen. Someone's screen time has to suffer.
Chiwetel Ejiofor was suitably sinister, without being at all campy, as the baddie.
River had some great fight scenes. And I like Summer Glau's voice.
Kaylee and Simon finally getting it on? No, I'm afraid I'm not buying it. I can buy Kaylee having a thing for Simon, but I never saw any actual chemistry between them on the show, and I didn't see it in the movie. Simon--far from striking me as homosexual, which I know a lot of fans thought--kind of struck me as asexual. Like he thought he was above sex. I just don't see him secretly pining for Kaylee, let alone resolving their 'sexual tension.' Sorry, Joss.
This might also be because I can't stand Simon.
On the other hand, some Mal/Inara action would not have been unwelcome. I mean, come on already! I doubt there'll be another Firefly movie. A little smooch would've killed them?
And finally... ::sniff::
They had to kill Shepherd? And most tragically, they had to kill Wash? It's going to take me a while to recover from that.
