Stash

I'm not quite sure how it began, but it now January Mustache Madness. My shop and I are now engaged in a competition of wills. We will see who can grow the bushiest and manliest 'stache. While I started a few days late, I've been making up ground quickly. You are all welcome to join me from across the world in solidarity. In truth, this thing bothers me sideways and I can't wait to be rid of it at the end of the month. In related news, this is most facial hair I've ever had and I've only been doing this for four days. And there will be no pictures, so you will be spared.

I got my financial from my mutual fund company 'Vanguard.' Nice people. I think that my taxable income for 2008 may actually be negative. It was a rough year in the stock market and I had a lot of money in an index fund (not that my lifecycle fund did much better.) In the meantime, the Savings Deposit Program offers a guaranteed 10% for up to $10,000, so I'm working on filling that out.

I got a chance to read the 'Watchmen' graphic novel, by the same fellow who did 'V for Vendetta.' It was outstanding. Easily the best novel of that medium. Even made 'V' look a little shabby. So, I ready to see the 'Watchmen' movie now. Not a Hajji copy either. The sound gets all messed up on those. I'll wait until mid-tour leave in August to see it. I recommend reading it if you get a chance. The characters have very well written psychological profiles and their personalities are fascinating. I still like my X-Men but I think it will be hard to go back to that.

I still wait in great anticipation for my parents to send a copy of Atlas Shrugged. In the meantime I'll settle from some Ludlum and his spy novels (The Bourne Ultimatum, etc.) I've also managed to find a little time for Nomad Soul in the Playstation 2. Still haven't found a 1000W transformer, so my XBOX 360 is just sitting there unused, though that isn't something that bothers me.

I had to take a small break from running this week. I made it 35 days in a row successfully before I ran into my first injury. Minor, it was a tendon in my right foot must have become inflamed, because I simply couldn't finish the run it hurt too much. Also, I have no desire to exacerbate an injury. So I took the next day off and returned to running today, with no signs of pain. I was worried that it would take longer to fix, but I am pleased it worked out the way it did. I was originally told by my platoon sergeant that there would be no PT test in Iraq. Then it was March and as of yesterday, February. So I am pleased to have anticipated this and been productive at the gym. I'm hoping to post a sub 13:00 2-mile score for the first time in my military career. So, as opposed to my usual dread, I now look forward to it.
