The key to understanding my mother is knowing how to interpret what she says. For example, "gentle incline" means "3 miles of torturously steep switchbacks." "Beautiful views" equates to "no trees and blazing sunshine." That sort of thing. ::wry smile:: Still, a six-mile hike (even with the switchbacks) is not at all out of my reach -- I used to do 8-10 miles easily when I was in much worse shape than I am now. And the views were indeed beautiful, we could see most of the Channel Islands on our way down. I even got to jump in the creek for a bit -- the water was cold and clear, just what I needed on the ascent!
In the evening my dad and I made ravioli, and then we all played a quick round of Scrabble. People are always intimidated to play with me, but the fact is that I'm not that great at it. I get hung up on making cool words rather than high-scoring ones, and on opening up the board for better play rather than playing defensively. I would have done better in this particular game had I not pulled a Q in the second round and then proceeded to not draw a single U or blank. :-P We're having a rematch tomorrow, perhaps I shall fare better. I did manage to achieve my usual moral victory of playing words my parents didn't know, though -- this time it was yod and ewer. Occasionally my prodigious lexicon comes in handy!
Feeling unaccountably homesick. I look forward to my return, and my upcoming move.
Pleasant somethings!
