My God. University is nearly over. Yesterday I started capturing my final project and tomorrow the sound of tears and cheers will fill the corridors as we receive our dissertation marks. I can't wait. Will probably be the last comedy night at Farnham tonight, that is something I'm going to take with me after I leave - stand-up comedy creates a better night than drunk dancing (although it is currently debatable whether I'll enjoy it more than the UEFA Champions League semi-final between Man.Utd and AC Milan). In fact, I've been laying off the drink big time lately. After Sensei Shiomitsu visited the Haslemere Dojo last week, many thing became much clearer in my head. 'We have a saying in Japan, it takes 3 years to learn how to sit, 3 to learn how to stand and 3 to learn how to walk'. This attention to detail is what I've been ignoring and one detail is how I treat and present myself.
I'll miss the walk to and from university, especially this time of year when the ground is dry enough to cross the fields and there's no chance of rain. I'll also miss the familiarity with this town. It is so much safer than home. There's never any need to watch your back and I know so many people, although it does get a bit annoying seeing the same faces every single day.
I'll miss being with all these young, creative people. I'll miss a lot of people for a while. I'll miss the freedom that comes from unemployment. However, I won't miss the accumulating debt, cleaning other peoples mess and the broken sofas. At least B will be returning with me. Fuck, I almost forgot to say I'll miss the library and the thousands and thousands of books and films.
With the end in sight I've also realised that I've matured and am glad I left home. I spent 30 minutes on the phone to my younger sister trying to persuade her to leave home, as she is considering commuting to university because hers is so close to home.
I can't wait to see new faces and places though. Would any Americans (there are only 3 - Ditte, Sean and John?) mind showing me and B around your part of that big country across the pond for a day/night? It's likely we'll be there at the end of the year or beginning of the next one. I understand I don't really know you well but I want to make the most of this trip. Let me know either way...
