they have a FAQ at locksoflove.org that explains everything already. Problem is, media, hair salons, and people keep on repeating erroneous information.
People get upset when they find out their hair is being sold if they don't understand the very limited amounts of specific type of hair that can be used for these specialty wigs (they retail around $7000 each on the regular hair prosthetic market) vs the massive amount of random types of hair people send in and if they don't understand how much money it costs to make the wigs (around 1000 each even with donated materials).
I've been saving my hair to make a wig for my moose. Seriously. I might end up selling my hair to a hair fetishist (there are people here in the city who pay top dollar to videotape very long hair being cut and for the hair. You don't have to take off your clothes and you get paid more if you cry) for the money because I am broke. Whatever I or anyones else does with our own hair is of course our own business.
I think locks of love is a good organization, just most people don't understand what exactly they do and that is where the problem is. People -- albeit perhaps well ntentioned-- want to "help" without having to do any effort (ie telling other people what to do with their hair) or any research into what they are doing (sending the wrong types of hair, getting upset when what they send is sold for cash to pay for the actual custom wigmaking).
