And that honour has to go to BtVS's Once More With Feeling! A lot of series have subsequently tried to pull off a musical episode, but none as successfully as Whedon. Probably because Joss remembered that the music wasn't an end in itself, but a marvelous opportunity to put some punch behind some very heart wrenching changes and revellations. Brilliant stuff.
