So, I was participating in a Twitter discussion about feminist speculative fiction, and I got told that I can't call myself a feminist because I'm male.
On the one hand, this strikes me as absurd, because the whole point of feminism is that we shouldn't be cast into specific roles defined solely by our gender.
On the other hand, someone pointed out that for a man to take on the mantle of a feminist is a form of cultural appropriation.
So, dear readers, what do you think? Can a cis-gendered male be a feminist? If not, what's the appropriate term? Can women belong to that other category, or do we remain a binary segregated society?
I'm not snarking. I genuinely want to know.
