Food Culture in Germany
Food culture around the world
Heinzelmann, Ursula
Westport, Conn: Greenwood Press, 2008.

For someone new to German cuisine who wants a concise overview of food culture and customs in English, this book will be adequate.  It's easy to read and well-organized, but the medieval and renaissance portions are quite short.  The current German holidays, customs, cooking culture and trends are featured, and the bibliography seems good.  It's not footnoted.
