Pet Peeves About Work.

I've decided I need to rant about annoyances at work. I rarely do, so I'm entitled, right? So, here we go!

[NOTE: This was written in parts rather than in one sitting, so don't be surprised if I've gone back and edited bits without warning. Just read it again, LOL.]

Know what I really hate? People at work who are friendly or say hello ONLY because/when they want something. The rest of the time, you could be invisible, and they'd not care. (You know the type, right? Those "only ever calls when they want something, like money" kind of people.) These are the people who, once you see them approach your desk and/or say hello to you, just basically think (hopefully not out loud) "yeah, what do you want now.", knowing that's what's coming next. Sometimes it's not just me that has to deal with this, so don't think I'm just a complainer, bah. @_@

Some other tip-offs to labelling this type: if they call you on the phone and start the sentence with "can you do me a little favour"...basically their way of saying "I'm shirking responsibility, and I need you to cover my ass..."

A lot of the time these people COULD theoretically do the stuff they need done by themselves, but would rather someone else did it instead. (AKA "passing the buck") It's one thing if you have a lot to do and need help (we all do that, right), but when you know they're not doing anything else, well?!?!? Sure, they may actually thank me afterwards (most of the time), but hey, when I'm doing their work for them, how thankless is that?

Oh, and the people who skip day after day/take sick days from work OFTEN, but ALWAYS make sure to come in to work on PAYDAY to collect their checks. (Even if they haven't earned their pay, or should be docked from missing more than the allotted days off.) We don't pay them to stay home or slack off, you know? (Perhaps we should, that's not a bad idea! They'd probably get more done.)

Oh, and people who just stand next to my desk staring at me, waiting for my attention, but don't SAY anything, just figure I care enough to ask what they want. And they will just stand there and watch what I'm doing, and it's annoying.

And let's not leave out the people who wait until the VERY last minute (procrastinators, of course) to tell you they needed something 5 minutes ago, when they knew this several DAYS ago, and get all rude and impatient when you have to drop everything to tend to their immediate needs. If you'd told me BEFORE, I might have been able to do it right away!

And I can't forget the people who insist on yapping and yapping about absolutely nothing, or stuff I just don't NEED to hear (use your imagination, around here it often involves pet chickens, or sports - SERIOUSLY). when I'm trying to work, or ask me questions about what I'm doing (as if it isn't obvious), or are just too damn nosy. ANNOYINNNNNGGGG!

And oh...things ONLY go wrong with office equipment when something DOES need to be done NOW. Every time without fail! That hella sucks. @_@

I try to make it my life's work to treat these annoying people similarly. Or at least act like I could care less what they insist they need *now*, because I'm already working on other stuff that's more important. And hey, maybe I annoy them too, but oh well! A little courtesy goes a long way. If someone actually takes the time to be a little friendly (for no underlying reasons), and doesn't treat me like a simple office slave (and nothing more), I will return the kindness. It's funny how that works!

Sure, I could be the "better" person and be the one who goes out of their way to be nice or whatever, but I tried that before and it doesn't work. Not with these people, at least. I don't deal well with difficult people, I'm one of those types who hates making mistakes, and if someone dares treat me rudely will almost immediately start to cry (usually after said rude person walks away). It's just my sensitivity, I can't help it. I just don't make a point of being nice to surly people, sorry. Besides, those types are always like that, they're not happy people, ever.

Many times a combination of all these factors is the reason I don't have much to do at work on occasion. If they'd all do their jobs properly, I'd actually be busy much more of the time, rather than having to wait for the paperwork and process order stuff, etc. Arrrgh!

Yeah. That is all for now. Just some interesting human dynamics in action.
