Chapter Nine: The Love Between Friends

~*~

“Why doesn’t Kame answering the phone?” Jin asked. He felt very uneasy, thinking that there’s something wrong with his best friend.

He quickly leaves the railway station after calling to Kame’s house for several times now. He ran as fast as he could to check on Kame.

When he arrived Kame’s house. He pressed the doorbell but no one ever opened the door. So, he went to the back of the house and there he found the person he was looking for. Jin smiled happily. Since there’s no place to enter, he, then, climbed on the fence. As he walked towards Kame, he can hear him sobbing.

“Kame, are you alright?” Jin asked curiously. But he didn’t receive any respond. So, he walked near the fire. “He seems to be burning something. But why is he crying?” Jin asked himself, until he his eyes lay on the journal. “A notebook?” He bends his knees to get the said notebook. But, stop by Kame’s question.

“Why?” Kame whispered.

Jin looked at the crying Kame. “Huh?”

Kame looked at Jin as he cries. “Why? Why did you come back?”

“Kame?” Jin doesn’t understand Kame at all. Why is he suddenly asking for Jin’s come back? “It doesn’t make any sense at all”.

“Why did you return? Why did you have to show yourself again? Why didn’t you just stay there forever and never come back here in Japan? Why Jin? Why?” Kame looked at Jin’s eyes finding answers to his questions.

Kame’s look was so fragile and vulnerable. Jin wants to do something but what? Kame’s asking many questions and here he was just looking at his best friend without doing something to calm him down. Jin felt useless. How could he strongly say to himself that he loves Kame, if he can’t even stop him from crying and the only thing he could say is, “Kame?”

With no respond coming from Jin, Kame sighed deeply and averted his eyes from him. “Jin, I can’t stay like this forever. I’m sick and tired of always crying. I don’t want to be hurt anymore. I want to be free. But, no matter how hard I try to let go…,” Kame shook his head. “I always end up being failed. You know why?” he looked at Jin, who creased his forehead for not understanding anything at all. “Because you always make me feel that I am needed and loved by you. You always treat me special, so special that I always mistakenly think that you love me. But when I thought about it deeply, I know you’re not. I know you can’t. And I know you wouldn’t love me,” Kame said. He wiped his tears away and stood up.

Jin stood up and asked, “You-you love me?”

Kame turned his eyes to the ground and slowly nodded. “Ever since”.

Jin felt happy about this. He didn’t know that Kame love him all along. This made him widely smile. “Why? Why didn’t you tell it to me before?”

Still avoiding on turning his gaze to Jin, Kame said, “Because I’m afraid that our friendship will end if I say it to you”. Then, he gave a bitter smile. “But don’t worry, because from now on I will totally forget these feelings. Since now that you already know my feelings towards you, I think it will not be difficult for me to forget it,” he said, finally looking at Jin as he still have his bitter smile on his lips. Tears are starts to form again on his eyes. But he tried not to make the tears fall again.

Jin’s face suddenly turned up-side-down. Now that he knows Kame’s feelings towards him, why does it have to be this way? Why does Kame have to let go? Jin creased hi forehead. “Kame, I-” he was cut off by Kame.

Kame shook his head. “No Jin, don’t. I don’t want to hear you say sorry for me. I don’t want you to pity me. No, I don’t want that. It’s enough for me to know that I pity myself, but knowing that you feel sorry for me is too much”.

“I’m not going to say sorry,” Jin said.

“Then, what?”

“I want you to know that, I-” Jin was cut of by someone’s call.

“Onii-chan!!!!” Kame turned around and saw his sisters and his grandmother waving at him.

“Kazuya, open the door!” His grandmother said.

Kame softly smiled and run off to open the door for his sisters and his grandmother, leaving Jin in the midst of saying something.

“I want you to know that, I love you. So, you don’t have to let go of your feelings. ‘Coz I will guarantee you that I will reciprocate you feelings from now on,” Jin whispered before leaving and going home, without even bothering on saying goodbye to Kame and his family.

“Onii-chan!” Kame’s sisters quickly hugged him right after he opened the door. “We miss you!”

“I miss you too,” Kame hugged them back.

“You’re sisters are so excited to see you,” Kame’s grandmother said.

“Yeah and I’m happy that they are here again. The house is so quiet when they are not around,” Kame said as he pick up Aya and carry her in his arms.

Few more giggles and hugs were made until finally Kaori noticed something. “Onii-chan, isn’t it that Jin-niichan is with you awhile ago?” she asked.

Kame stopped on teasing her little. He looked and Kaori and then, suddenly remembered Jin telling something to him but was cut off when his sisters and his grandmother arrived.

He carefully put Aya down and quickly went to the backyard. “Jin?” He was surprised that Jin was not there. He walked near the place where he and Jin had talked. Then, he noticed that his old journal was not there also. He knows that there are still some pages left that he haven’t been thrown and burned. “That’s weird. I thought I left them here?”

Jin was so depress right now. He needs someone to talk to, someone who will listen to him, someone, like Naomi.

“Hello?” Naomi answered the call.

“Naomi,” Jin said in an eerie voice.

“Jin, are you alright?” Naomi asked as she raised her eyebrow.

“No,” Jin briefly said.

“Why?”

“Kame just confessed to me,”

Naomi creased her forehead. “Isn’t that nice? I mean Kame had already con- WAIT!! WHAT?? You mean Kame likes you?”

“Yeah, I went to his house awhile ago and saw him crying. Then, he started asking me about the reason of my come back here in Japan,” Jin wearily said.

“Then, what did you say to him?” Naomi eagerly asked.

“Nothing, I don’t know what to say. It was too sudden and I really don’t understand anything at all. Then he told me that, he doesn’t want to be hurt again so he will let go of his feelings for me,”

“WHAT?! Why? What did you do? Did you confess to him?”

“I tried but before I could say anything, his sisters and his grandmother arrived. So, I haven’t confessed to him yet,” Jin said before letting a very deep and depress sighed.

“Is that so?” the only reply Naomi had capable of saying.

“Naomi, do you think that confessing to him will make him love me again?”

“Jin, Kame still loves you,”

“But he said that-” Jin was cut off by Naomi.

“Kame had loved you all this time. Letting go is not that easy, Jin. It will take time for you to do that. And since Kame is just starting on the process of letting go, I think you should do something to regain his feelings for you before everything’s to late,” Naomi said as she shifted her phone to her other ear.

“Like what? Confessing? Courting?”

“If you’re capable of doing all those things, then why not try it? Nothing will be lost until the time you already had given up. And at least you tried, right?”

Jin smiled. “I guess you’re right. Yeah, you are right. I will definitely not going to give up. Thanks Naomi. You’re really the best,”

“Nah, I’m just being a good friend,”

After a few ‘how’s life?’ talks, Jin and Naomi bid goodbye to each other.

Jin took out something that is tucked in his jacket. “I wonder what’s in this notebook?” Jin flipped the pages, only to land on the page that to he seems to be very familiar with.

Love is something that everyone treasures forever, that everyone starts to hate, once they got hurt. And the same love that everyone is capable of giving. People always say that loving and being loved are the two most wonderful things in life. But, I recently found out that it’s not true. Loving and being loved are far different from each other. Because, loving someone doesn’t mean that you are being loved in return. So, where’s the wonderful thing about that? I also found out that, love doesn’t have ups and downs. Because if it have, then how come mine were always down? And if people say that love gives happiness, then how come I always cry? If love is about give and take, then why am I always the one giving without even receiving anything? My feelings are not being reciprocated but I keep on hoping that someday that person will.  But how long will I hope? How long will I have this unrequited love?

“Seems familiar to me?” Jin said to himself. Then, an awful memory from the past strike him. He widened his eyes, when he remembered how he laughed at Kame’s love note. It made him felt dreadful about remembering it. He didn’t know that he was already laughing at the feelings of his only love towards him. “I’m such a big jerk! No wonder Kame got tired of loving me,” Jin wants to hit himself but, of course, he didn’t. He maybe a jerk but his not that stupid. He hugged Kame’s journal and whispered, “I’m sorry”.
