Chapter Nine: The Love Between Friends
“Most of the time, we can’t tell what’s wrong with somebody by just looking at them.
After all, they can look perfectly fine outside while their inside tells us the whole story.”
~*~
“Kame, what are you doing?” Jin asked as he sees the boy writing something on a notebook. They were in Kame’s room. It was Saturday and usually, they go out and play in the park. But, unfortunately not this time.
Kame didn’t answer or even look at Jin. He was busy on writing something on his journal. He was so drawn to it that he didn’t notice Jin was now standing next to him.
“Kame, I’m bored. Let’s do something fun,” Jin complained. Kame still didn’t answer. He keeps on writing and writing. Jin was starting to get annoyed. “What are writing on that notebook? Let me read it,” He suddenly snatches away the said notebook. Kame quickly stands up on his seat and tries to get his journal back.
“Jin, give it back to me,” Kame commanded.
“Nope, I was talk to you but you’re not listening. You are so busy on writing on this notebook. What’s so good about this thing anyway?” Jin said as he examines the appearance of the notebook. “Huh! Nothing’s really special about it”.
“Well, like what you’ve said. Nothing’s special about it, so give it back to me,” Kame said, as he tries to grab his journal to the young man, too bad, Jin was too quick for him to catch on.
“No, I don’t want to. You’re ignoring your best friend for this stupid thing,” Jin said as he held up the notebook high, so that Kame couldn’t reach it.
Kame stopped on retrieving his journal. He was now standing there and glaring at the young man. Stupid? Having a journal is stupid? Unfortunately for Jin, he didn’t recognize the glare that the latter was giving him. He opened the notebook, which is according to him was a stupid thing, and started reading whatever the page he was on.
Love is something that everyone treasures forever, that everyone starts to hate, once they got hurt. And the same love that everyone is capable of giving. People always say that loving and being loved are the two most wonderful things in life. But, I recently found out that it’s not true. Loving and being loved are far different from each other. Because, loving someone doesn’t mean that you are being loved in return. So, where’s the wonderful thing about that? I also found out that, love doesn’t have ups and downs. Because if it have, then how come mine were always down? And if people say that love gives happiness, then how come I always cry? If love is about give and take, then why am I always the one giving without even receiving anything? My feelings are not being reciprocated but I keep on hoping that someday that person will. But how long will I hope? How long will I have this unrequited love?
Jin stopped on reading and gave Kame a serious look. Kame suddenly felt confused and embarrassed. Confused, because of the gazed that the young man was currently giving him. Did he already find out about his secret? Embarrassed, because Jin just had read his journal. His private journal, where he kept everything. Even, his outmost secret. Good thing, he doesn’t include any names on it or Jin might able to read his name on every page of his journal.
“Jin?” Kame said softly.
“Kame, this is,” Jin said with amazement in his eyes.
Kame bit his lower lip. “I-I’m sorry for keeping it to you,” he said as he slowly lower his head afraid that Jin might had already know his feelings.
“I never thought that you will do such a thing like this,”
“I-I-,”
Kame doesn’t know how he will explain it to Jin. Everything was too sudden for him. He kept his head low and bit his lower lip. Now, what am I going to do? He sighed. Then, he heard Jin suddenly laughing. Why is he laughing?
“Jin?” Kame called with a curious look.
Jin didn’t stop nor respond to Kame’s call. He’s laughing continuously without even minding at his best friend.
“Jin!” Kame yelled.
“What?” Jin asked as he wipe the tears that formed in his eyes, because of laughing too much.
“Why are you laughing?”
“Kame, why wouldn’t I laugh? This is funny, the funniest thing that I’ve ever read in my entire life,” Jin said while pointing at the notebook.
Kame feels his heart starting to tear apart. It was the most shameful thing that had ever happened to him. Jin just insult his feelings, not only his feelings but his self. He wants to cry right then and there, but he tries to control himself not to. “I-I see, but I-I-I really don’t think that it is fu-funny,” Kame said as he try to act like he doesn’t care and not really affected by Jin’s insult.
“Kame, it is. I don’t even know that you right something like this. It’s so cheesy and girly,” Jin starts to laugh again. “You know Kame, to me it sounds like you are in love, are you?”
“No, I’m not,” Kame denied.
“Then, why did you write this cheesy-girly thing?” Jin raised his eyebrow. “I bet there’s plenty more in this notebook,” Jin said as he started browsing the other pages.
Kame grabs his notebook quickly before Jin could read more of his journal and insult it.
“Jin, why don’t you go home now? I bet your mom is already waiting for you,” He slowly pushed Jin out of his room.
“But Kame, we haven’t played yet. And besides, it’s still early and I just promised Mom that I will go home right before dinner,” Jin complained, as he was standing right in front of Kame’s room.
“Well, isn’t it nice? At least you can go home early today,” Kame sighed. “Look, I’m really not in the mood to play with you right now. I’m tired and I want to rest. Why don’t we play tomorrow, ok?” Kame excused.
“Kame, we haven’t done anything that made you weary. And for your information, we have school tomorrow, so we can’t certainly play,” Jin reasoned out.
Kame was fed up by Jin’s complaints, childishness and most certainly his stubbornness. He just wants to take a rest, just to be alone, to think before he couldn’t already control himself in front of his best friend.
“Jin! Just please, go home!” Kame shouted. Jin was shocked, never in their years of being best friend ever Kame yelled at him. “I-I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to shout on you. I’m just tired that’s all, so please understand”.
Jin sighed. “As you wish,” he said before he leaved. He didn’t even bother to say nor wave to goodbye.
Kame quickly closed the door right after Jin left. He leaned on the door and sighed.
Kame suddenly came back to his senses when he heard the phone ringing loudly. He looked at his old journal for a minute before he put it down on his bedside table.
“Coming!” he shouted as he go downstairs.
He was doing his weekly general cleaning of the house. And also it is because his grandmother will come to drop off his little sisters today.
He stood in front of the telephone for a minute, hesitating to answer it thinking that it might be Jin again, he’s been calling for ‘who-knows-how-many-times’ now. Though it’s nice to know that Jin is calling him, but it somewhat gives him the creeps.
“He-hello?” Kame said nervously.
“Hello, Kazuya?”
“Oh, Oba-chan!” Kame said happily. He suddenly felt relief that it wasn’t who he expects it to be.
“Kazuya, how are you?” his grandmother asked.
“I’m fine. I’m just cleaning the house,” Kame answered.
“I see. Then, it will be perfect, since your sisters and I will be there home soon,” his grandmother informed him.
“You’re on your way now?”
“Yes, and probably before lunchtime we will arrive,”
“Oh, ok. Then I really need to finish cleaning the house now, so that I could prepare our lunch,”
After few more talks, Kame bid goodbye to his grandmother and returned on his chores. He went back to his room. He stood beside his bed and pick up his old journal.
“I guess keeping you will only give me certain unwanted memories. Unwanted memories that never fail to make me cry and hurt,” he said as he touched his old journal. But then, he gave a bitter smile and said, “But it is also these unwanted memories that, the only thing that connects us and gives me reason to hold on to my love for you”.
Tears start to fall from Kame’s eyes. He walked out the room, went downstairs and to the backyard along with his old journal that he firmly holds. He stand near the garbage bin and he reach for the lighter, that was placed nearly beside the garbage bin. Then, he set a fire while sobbing in tears.
He looked at the fire for a minute before turning his sight to his old journal. He opened his precious journal and touched the first page of it. His hand is shaking as he slowly griping the pages. Tears are heavily flowing as he starts tearing it. He thrown it into the fire and watched as it is being eaten by the flame. “It’s better this way”. “It’s really better this way”.
Kame continued on ripping and burning the pages of his journal. As he does it, his mind starts to flash the past memories of him and Jin. Too much flashback causes him to fall from his knees, making his old journal fall carelessly to the ground.
