Home on the Range

I spent most of yesterday in the computer lab with my Range Managment group.  Each group in the class has been assigned a pasture that's part of a local rancher's grazing lands and we have to do an assessment of the condition of the pasture and draft a range-use plan for our area.  So far we've just been doing computer mapping  from the data already on file, although unfortunately the only arial photos we could find were taken in 2004 - before the pine beetle outbreak, which means there could be as much as 90% less tree cover out there.   Since I'm pretty useless at GIS type stuff, I spent my time gathering info on the plant communities and the biogeoclimatic zones.  We'll be out in the field next Saturday to ground-truth and do our vegetation survey.

This is already feeling like an unholy amount of work, especially given that I'm also involved in a small mammal-trapping project in my Wildlife Management class which requires a lot of extracurricular hours.

On the plus side I've just discovered Axis Powers Hetalia!  Good times.  ^_^

school, technology, for science!
