Songs: Over the Rhine, Keane

Aug 24, 2006 18:41

I don't know why, but when I listen to songs for my own fic I always end up finding songs for tmelange's instead. I didn't really expect to find a song that fit her latest "Hookerino" set of stories, which feature a great deal of Clark and Bruce hanging out and chatting. But then I find a song about, um, hanging out and chatting. And it's gorgeous, just like her stories.

Over the Rhine, "Born"
Husky, twangy, country-flavored vocals...langourous lyrics and pacing.
I was born to laugh
I learned to laugh through my tears
I was born to love
I'm gonna learn to love without fear

Pour me a glass of wine
Talk deep into the night
Who knows what we'll find

I was born to laugh
I learned to laugh through my tears
I was born to love
I'm gonna learn to love without fear

Pour me a glass of wine
Talk deep into the night
Who knows what we'll find

Intuition, deja vu
The Holy Ghost haunting you
Whatever you got
I don't mind

Put your elbows on the table
I'll listen long as I am able
There's nowhere I'd rather be

Secret fears, the supernatural
Thank God for this new laughter
Thank God the joke's on me

We've seen the landfill rainbow
We've seen the junkyard of love
Baby it's no place for you and me

I was born to laugh
I learned to laugh through my tears
I was born to love
I'm gonna learn to love without fear

The other song is part of my resolute project to write Bruce just a touch more well-adjusted. This song is an interesting example--the lyrics seem to be the usual dark and broody, but the giddily hopeful rush of the melody counteracts them perfectly to put the whole song into equilibrium.

Keane, "Crystal Ball"
I don't know where I am,
and I don't really care,
I look myself in the eye,
there's no one there.
I fall upon the earth,
I call upon the air,
but all I get is the same old vacant stare.
Oh, crystal ball, crystal ball,
Save us all, tell me life is beautiful...

Who is the man I see
where I'm supposed to be?
I lost my heart, I buried it too deep
under the iron sea.

Oh, crystal ball, crystal ball,
Save us all, tell me life is beautiful,
Mirror, mirror on the wall.

Lines ever more unclear,
I'm not sure I'm even here,
The more I look the more I think that I'm
starting to disappear.

Oh, crystal ball, crystal ball,
Save us all, tell me life is beautiful,
Mirror, mirror on the wall.
Oh, crystal ball, hear my song,
I'm fading out, everything I know is wrong,
So put me where I belong.

I don't know where I am,
and I don't really care,
I look myself in the eye,
there's no one there.
I fall upon the earth,
I call upon the air,
but all I get is the same old vacant stare.

Oh, crystal ball, crystal ball,
Save us all, tell me life is beautiful,
Mirror, mirror on the wall.
Oh, crystal ball, hear my song,
I'm fading out, everything I know is wrong,
So put me where I belong.

I'm really smitten with these two songs right now and wanted to share the wealth a bit.
