Music: The Finn Brothers, Crowded House

Jul 18, 2008 23:50

damo_in_japan converted me to the gorgeousness that is Neil and Tim Finn quite some time ago, but I don't think I've ever shared any of their songs.  They have heartbreaking amounts of talent and their songs are absolutely luminous--lonely and yearning and full of grace.  Two songs on heavy rotation as I've been writing the latest "Music of the Spheres" arc:

"Nothing Wrong With You," the Finn Brothers.  Clark to Bruce, of course--a passionate defense.

It's a slow parade
Down a dusty road
We've learned to take abuse
From devils we don't know

People who have lost all heart
Look for someone else to blame
You just keep on walking
When they call you a dirty name

All the mud in this town
All the dirt in this world
None of it sticks on you
(You shake it off)
Cause you're better than that
And you don't need it
There's nothing wrong with you

The moment that we dread
It comes all too soon
Voices in your head
Still carry on the tune

Let the sound come in
From the world outside
You just keep on singing
When they tell you filthy lies

All the mud in this town
All the dirt in this world
None of it sticks on you
(You shake it off)
Cause you're better than that
And you don't need it
There's nothing wrong with you

Remember how it made you hurt
Even as you fight to go on
Turn it into something else
Turn it into something else

All the mud in this town
All the dirt in this world
None of it sticks on you
(You shake it off)
Cause you're better than that
And you don't need it
No, you don't believe it

All the mud in this town
All the dirt in this world
None of it sticks on you
(You shake it off)
Cause you're better than that
And you don't need it
There's nothing wrong with you
There's nothing wrong with you
No

I walk along with you

There's nothing wrong with you
There's nothing wrong with you
"Together Alone," Crowded House.  The non-English lyrics are sung by a Maori choir.  I started crying the first time I listened to this song, walking along with my iPod.  Heh, crazy foreigner.

Together alone
above and beneath
we were as close
as anyone can be
now you are gone
far away from me
as is once will always be
together alone

anei ra maua (here we are together)
e piri tahi nei (in a very close embrace)
e noha tahi nei (being together)
ko maua anake (just us alone)

kei runga a Rangi (Rangi the sky-father is above)
ko papa Kai raro (the earth mother is below)
e mau tonu nei (our love for one another)
kia mau tonu ra (is everlasting)

Together alone
shallow and deep
holding our breath
paying death no heed
I'm still your friend
when you are in need
as is once will always be
earth and sky
moon and sea
