Songs: Suzanne Vega, Linkin Park

Feb 28, 2008 23:25

A couple of rather sad and angtsy (but lovely) songs tonight.

Suzanne Vega, "Bound."  From her most recent album.  It's a beautiful song about a relationship where neither member can ever quite give up on the other, but I was arrested by the starkness of the last lines especially:
When I said, "I am bound to you forever,"
Here's what I meant:

I'm constantly amazed by the depth of the lyrics Linkin Park employs. It seems they only get better and better.

*hugs*

I really like that song. It's heartbreaking...works so well for almost any member of the Bat-clan, too...

Thanks for the music, Jen! The lyrics to both of these songs are so haunting, and the songs themselves are beautiful ...

Sad songs! I'm not sure why I'm in the mood for sad songs, but there they are...and I agree, the melodies are beautiful too. I always look at lyrics first, so the melodies being nice is a good bonus for me. :)

When I said:

Here's what I meant:
I am bound to you forever.

Woah, that's... woah. That's really attacking the problem of "what we say covers what we mean" rather directly, isn't it?

Somehow, I can't quite buy it. I can't be the only one thinking of Iago, can I? The exact quote is "I am you own forever", but you get the idea.

That's interesting...*googles* Othello is the one who says "I am bound to thee forever" before that line, at the moment he begins to accept what Iago is saying. I can't imagine the echoes are completely accidental, with the sort of world-weariness of the narrator...

I also had no idea Othello was so slashy. ;)

Yes, yes it is! Especially when Ian McKellen is playing Iago, that's all I'm saying...

A bunch of Shakespeare's plays are just as slashy, and several of his sonnets were written to men...

*makes a note*

That sounds officially hot. I have a version of him in Macbeth that I bought recently, but haven't watched yet...must get my Shakespeare fix soon...
