Thanks to
magnolia_simms, I own a copy of the 1975 musical "It's a Bird, It's a Plane, It's Superman!" (So this is all her fault!) I finally watched it this week and it was all a crack-addled fangirl could desire. I'm hoping to convince
damo_in_japan to upload onto Youtube the sequence in which the two villains (original characters but clearly modeled on Luthor and Steve Lombard) do an amazingly gay dance routine together. Until he does I shall merely share with you the sequence which proves that even when camped up, Superman cannot avoid the woobie.
In a sequence of events perhaps too bizarre to fully summarize, Superman has gotten psychoanalyzed by the villain and has become convinced that he's "nothing but a freak." Lois shows up to visit Clark (who she's fallen in love with not knowing he's Superman) and Much Brain-Breaking Woobie Ensues.

Fear not! Superman has forgotten he's invulnerable and arrives back on the bridge next scene, dripping and annoyed. Two college students, "Joe" and "Jerry" (cute!) give him a pep talk and restore his faith in himself. And so Superman learns the valuable lesson (exact quote): "It's okay to be a freak, as long as you freak in the right direction."
Motto, my friend. Motto.
