So I have just realized that most of my posts lately (you know, when I do post them) are all about video games.
Recently, I’ve been going to friends’ houses to group-watch games being played, which is usually my preferred method of playing. Most of my friends here are gamers, and they are much more hand-eye coordinated than I am. Right now, we’re in the midst of Resident Evil and Amnesia. And this post is about
Amnesia.
I heard whisperings of the game being the Scariest Thing Ever, and thanks to a charity event, my pals purchased it for reasonably cheap. The premise of the game is you wake up in a dark and spooky castle and you have amnesia (DUR). You wander around said castle, solving puzzles, uncovering props you pick up and journal entries where you slowly piece together that you’re a man named Daniel and you willingly had your memory wiped. While you wander around, you hear screaming and growling in the distance. You soon learn that there’s evil in the castle, a monster that’s patrolling the halls and this weird fleshy stuff that grows over the walls and floors.
The neat part about the game is that it’s a game about stealth. You have no weapons and you’re basically only supplied with a lantern, so if the monster is nearby, you go and find a hiding spot so he doesn’t see and kill you. There are wardrobes and nooks and crannies everywhere for you to duck and hide in. BUT. It’s a dark castle, so if you spend too much time in the dark, your character’s sanity starts to dissolve and the walls start to pulse and warp. And if you actually see the monster, your sanity is gone (it’ll just say “…”) and the controls are difficult to control. You pick up tinderboxes along the way to light candles and standing in the light soothes you.
I think what helps make this game so scary (aside from us being wimps), it that most of the game relies on sound design, so you’re imagining everything to be way worse than it probably is. And there’s a building creeping tension throughout the game, so when you turn a corner and see the monster, it shocks you.
Anyway, we recorded a few vids of decently scary parts. They’re not great and you barely see the monster, but you certainly hear our commentary and reactions.

These first two is one scene split up. And it’s the first instance where the monster actually starts chasing us. In the second one, you can hear him breaking down the door. That weird crunching noise you hear is, we think, you grinding your teeth because you’re terrified.

The second one is from last night where we definitely had a run in.

Not us, but this was the first video I saw of Amnesia and laughed so hard while being terrified. Even now, I still get a little creeped out watching it. It's also pretty much the same scene I posted earlier.
Not sure if I’d recommend this for everyone, especially if you scare really easily like me. Ideal gameplay is by yourself with headphones on, BUT NO WAY I’M DOING DAT SHIT. Omg. OMG.
