Okay, basically, instead of jumping off a building and landing back in 1973, Sam Tyler is actually an ASTRONAUT in the year 2038 (I think) and is going to… wait for it… LAND ON MARS. The whole 2008/1973 was a sort of dream stasis as they were in some sort of suspended animation and the computer got Sam’s dream wrong. He wanted to be a cop in 2008, but instead was one in 1973 with 2008’s memories. Whatever.
So Chris, Ray and Annie are amongst the crew and Gene Hunt is there, but he’s not Gene Hunt. He’s MAJOR TOM. And HE’S SAM’S DAD.
The last shot is Gene's shoe stepping on the red Martian soil.
