I'm not sure what they come from, maybe it has something to do with Christ's death, that the witches (the devils assistants) wanted to celebrate it the night when Jesus was betrayed and imprisoned...

But nowadays, the Easter witches is seen as something happy, fluffy characters, with no harm intended...
