Chapter 2

(Taipei, Taiwan)

It was time.

Yesung crossed the street and approached the store carefully. The boy was alone today, making it the perfect opportunity to strike. Ending the boy’s twirling, bouncing and skipping would be an added bonus. He didn’t understand humans, especially this energetic bundle of joy he was observing. It almost gave him a headache.

He opened the door without a second thought and winced at the tinkle of bells. Yesung had forgotten about that little detail. He wouldn’t be seen, of course, but the boy had heard the stupid chimes. So much for being undetected.

Yesung held his breath as the boy turned around with a smile, almost yelping when the other looked straight at him. Confusion was clear in his eyes and Yesung breathed a sigh of relief. It was just a fluke. Yesung strolled in, swiftly jumping over the row of neatly placed flowers and landing silently behind the human.

Should he take the necklace and dispose of the boy, or bring them back together? Yesung quickly debated in his head. It would be more efficient to lose the human, but they still hadn’t figured out how to break the seal yet. The boy may prove to be useful. Yesung decided to play on the safe side and keep the boy alive.

Just as he was about to grab him, the boy suddenly whipped around. Yesung’s heart nearly jumped out of his chest when frantic eyes met his. They saw right past him, but the coincidence was a bit unnerving.

He took several steps back and watched as the boy cleaned up the broken flower pots. Yesung couldn’t help but notice his feminine features and delicate hands. The way he whispered to the inanimate plants made Yesung cringe. He was exactly like Jaejoong, Yesung mused with a smirk. Soft-hearted and compassionate. Weak.

The original plan had been to wait until all nine were located before trying to steal them. That way, even if their enemies caught wind of their actions, it would be too late to stop them. Brilliant, except Hankyung was a rather impatient person. They decided to scrap that plan and ‘take the ones you find’ became the new strategy.

Out of the four humans Henry found, Ryeowook was definitely the easiest to target. Kyuhyun was next, then Heechul and Siwon. Yesung chuckled at the irony. How could one of the most powerful Energies be held by a boy who was absolutely defenseless? It was pathetic, really. He would have thought that the Guardians were smarter than this.

But then again, if they had realized their true potential, they wouldn’t have sacrificed their powers to a bunch of lowly beings in the first place. If only they had joined forces with Hankyung, then maybe they would still be alive. All that talk about peace and balance did little good when you were buried six-feet under.

There’s still Leeteuk, a small voice in his head reminded him. Ah yes, Heejoon’s servant boy. Henry still hadn’t found him yet but he could do little by himself. Leeteuk wasn’t one of the original Guardians so his powers were limited. The man was intelligent though, Yesung had to admit, he would find some way to fight back.

Yesung, hurry up.

The mind message from Zhou Mi cut through his thoughts, forcing him to direct his attention back to Ryeowook. The boy was apologizing to the flowers now, causing Yesung to roll his eyes at the childish behaviour. It wasn’t as if plants could hear you, so why bother?

His thoughts were interrupted for a second time when a wave of dizziness threw him off balance. He crashed against the wall, trying to fight the sudden pain in his head. His chest felt heavy as he struggled to breathe normally. His vision blurred, eyes unfocused. The sensations were oddly familiar, but Yesung couldn’t remember when it had happened before.

Mi, what the hell was that?

Probably a time shift. Seungho’s Energy.

Shit. Do we know who has it?

Yesung closed his eyes and concentrated hard. He could feel the subtle presence of the other nine again, meaning that the humans had found some way to reactivate the powers. How was that even possible? They didn’t know anything about it.

No, but at least this solves two of our problems.

Yesung supposed Zhou Mi was right. Now that they could sense the Energies, they didn’t need Henry to go around arbitrary looking for them. He had found almost half of them just by guesswork but it was taking way too long. The Guardians had been clever, using a common earthly possession as a cover.

Not only that, but the nine had somehow locked away their powers. Simply having the necklace wasn’t good enough.  They needed something to break the spell. Somehow, the humans had indirectly done the work for them. Another coincidence? There were too many of those lately.

Yeah, but it also adds a couple.

Yesung replied silently. Of course, there was always the flip side. Taking their Energies from them now would prove to be difficult. Stealing a piece of flimsy jewellery was one thing, stealing a power was another. Energies bind to their owners over time. Forcefully removing it from their bodies would only be possible if the person was dead.

They would have to fight these new and improved humans. Not that Yesung had any problem with that, he just didn’t particularly enjoy killing.

Get out of there, Yesung. Ryeowook can-

“Who are you?” A meek voice pulled him out of the conversation in his head. Yesung froze when curious eyes met his, actually seeing him for the first time.

Shit.

(Tokyo, Japan)

Sungmin was running.

His own blood trickled down his fingers as he pressed against the shallow wound on his neck. He was bleeding and Sungmin couldn’t understand why. Well, of course he knew why he was bleeding. The feeling of sharp metal against his throat was still vivid in his mind. What he didn’t understand was why he was still alive.

One moment, he had been awaiting his own inevitable death. The next, he had felt a strange warmth encompassing his entire body. For a second, Sungmin had thought he was in heaven. He quickly discovered that this was not the case when he slowly opened his eyes. He was still in the dirty alley, only this time, he was the only thing moving.

The men surrounding him were frozen, as if someone had suddenly hit pause on a video he was watching. Their mouths were open mid-yell but there was no sound. The pressure on the knife had stopped, the blade barely piercing his smooth skin. He didn’t have time to question it then. Sungmin had reacted purely on impulse. Without thinking, he pushed the man’s arm away and ran.

He was still running.

Somewhere along the way, the cars on the street had started to move again. The people on the sidewalk resumed their stroll, and Earth continued to spin. But Sungmin didn’t notice. His heart was racing, his mind foggy.

When the adrenaline finally died down, Sungmin collapsed onto the nearby stairs of an old apartment building. He fought to catch his breath as he sat with his head in his hands. The impossibility of the situation hit Sungmin with full force, hundreds of questions whirling around in his mind.

What the hell just happened?

“Hi, I’m Leeteuk.”

It took Sungmin a few seconds to realize that the voice was talking to him. The man was smiling, eyes warm and hand outstretched. He didn’t look threatening but he was a stranger nonetheless. Sungmin immediately shrunk back, putting as much distance as he could between him and potential harm. The man only chuckled, dropping his hand and taking a seat next to him.

“That’s a pretty necklace.”

Sungmin turned abruptly and stared wide-eyed at the man. How did he know about his necklace? Sungmin wasn’t even wearing it anymore. He didn’t want to risk losing it again and had tucked it safely inside his coat pocket. Leeteuk simply gave him a knowing smile.

“I can answer all of your questions, but you’ll have to come with me.”

The man held his hand out to Sungmin again, this time beckoning for him to take it. Sungmin hesitated. This scenario was in every ‘don’t follow strangers’ lecture that ever existed. Even so, something told him to take the risk. Leeteuk wouldn’t hurt him. Besides, it wasn’t like he was leaving anything behind. No one would miss him. No one would even look for him.

“O-okay.” Sungmin nodded unsurely and placed his hand in Leeteuk’s. The man reminded him of his father, though he didn’t look much older than he was.

“Hold on tight.”

(Vancouver, Canada)

This was turning out to be the worst day ever.

Kyuhyun swore under his breath as he dumped two pills into his hand. Taking a big gulp of water, he swallowed the painkillers and replaced the bottle in the cabinet. He leaned against the counter for a while, waiting for the pain in his head to fade away. When it dulled into a throb, Kyuhyun decided that it was good enough.

He still had a lot to do. Kyuhyun made his way back up the stairs two at a time. He had wasted too much time playing around with that necklace of his. After the initial flash of light, nothing had happened. Nothing but this killer headache, at least. He supposed it was God’s way of telling him not be foolish.

“What the-”

Kyuhyun screamed when he opened the door to his room and saw two people sitting on his bed. One of them studied him curiously, the other jumped, clearly frightened by his loud voice.

“Kyuhyun-sshi,” The calm one started to speak. They knew his name. They knew who he was. They were going to kill him. And that was where Kyuhyun’s coherent thoughts ended. He completely freaked out.

Kyuhyun spun around and ran. Down the stairs, out the door and onto the street without his shoes. He was halfway to his neighbour’s doorbell when the same man materialized in front of him. Literally, materialized, as in he just suddenly appeared out of thin air.

Holy shit, I’m being chased by ghosts.

Before Kyuhyun could scream again, the ‘person’ covered his mouth and pulled him away from the yard. The iron grip around his arm felt solid, so Kyuhyun ruled out ghosts. His hand was too warm to be a vampire’s. So what the hell were they?

“Calm down, we’re not going to hurt you.”

Calm down? You try running into a bunch of strangers in your own goddamn house and let’s see how calm you-

Kyuhyun nodded, ignoring the long rant in his head.  The man-like creature released him and Kyuhyun stayed silent. With a sigh, the ‘thing’ introduced himself as Leeteuk. Kyuhyun fought the urge to ask if he was human because it seemed rude. Then again, the 2 of them had broken into his house so screw manners.

“What are-”

“I have to go. I’ll come back for you. Be careful.”

Leeteuk frowned as his senses showed two Energies together. One of them was definitely Yesung.  Leeteuk didn’t like the situation one bit.

“Wait, what do you-”

Before Kyuhyun could even finish his thought, Leeteuk disintegrated and disappeared, leaving Kyuhyun blinking in the darkness. Mildly annoyed and a hundred times confused, he stomped back into his house and locked the doors. Not that it did any good against those ‘things’ but Kyuhyun felt more secure.

He took the stairs up his room again, slowly this time, his mind working on overdrive. Just 5 minutes ago, the laws of physics were still intact. And now, he had just witnessed teleportation in all its glory. It was impossible, completely ridiculous.

In theory, teleportation works by dematerializing an object at one point, and sending the details of that object’s precise atomic configuration to another location, where it will be reconstructed. A transporter that enabled a person to be sent instantaneously to another location would require travel at the speed of light, impossible. The machine would have to pinpoint and analyze all the atoms in the human body (which is like, 10^28 atoms), impossible.

Leeteuk didn’t even have a machine. What the hell?

“Um, where’s Leeteuk-sshi?”

Kyuhyun swivelled around in his chair and found another boy staring expectantly at him. Right, there were two of them. He cursed in his head for always being so jumpy. He was a step away from a heart attack.

“He left.”

“Oh.”

Kyuhyun couldn’t tell whether the boy was older or younger than him. At first, he had decided on older. But seeing the slight pout on his face made Kyuhyun think otherwise. He was kind of cute, in a ‘there’s an alien in my room’ sort of way.

“He said he’ll be back though.”

“Oh, okay.” The other sighed in relief as he glanced around the room distractedly. Kyuhyun played with his fingers nervously. He hated how awkward the silence was.

“My name’s Kyuhyun.” He said in an attempt to break the silence. There was an unearthly creature in his room, might as well make friends with it. That would probably decrease his chances of dying or worse, taken for experiments. He scouted closer and stuck out his hand. Did they know what a hand shake was?

“I know. We saw your name on all your awards.” The boy offered a small smile in return and shook his hand quickly. “I’m Sungmin.”

Awards? Kyuhyun caught a glimpse of all the certificates and trophies in one corner of his room and flushed in embarrassment. Dammit, he must have looked like the biggest show-off in the history of arrogant jerks. In truth, Kyuhyun had only kept them there to avoid his mom from flaunting them in the living room. No one was supposed to see them.

Seeing Kyuhyun’s reaction, Sungmin couldn’t help but giggle. The sound of his light laughter secretly made Kyuhyun smile. Yup, definitely cute, he thought, in an ‘I wish you were human’ sort of way.
