Kaito/Shinichi Theme #2

Alright, second one done! Yay! If I keep up the current rate of progress, I'll be finished with all 25 of mine... in February. *snerks*

Anyway, it's Theme #2 - Priority. And it's not quite right, but hey, it's what came out for this one so yeah... and I figured with Conan getting hurt last time, it's Kid's turn. *g*

If Shinichi hadn't been still up at 2am finishing up the day's notes, he probably would never had known about his late night visitor. As it was, he barely heard the light knocking at his window and only investigated the noise thinking he'd left the window open earlier. What he certainly didn't expect was to find the white clad thief lounging on his fire escape.

"Kid!” Shinichi pushed open the window. “What are you...” His well-trained eyes quickly took in the very careful way Kid was sitting and the fleeting expression of pain when the thief shifted. “Never mind, can you move well enough to climb in?”

“I managed to get here, didn't I?” Kid retorted as he struggled to his feet. Shinichi rolled his eyes, but didn't go out on the landing even when Kid almost collapsed back to the ground. The thief had a proud streak a mile long and Shinichi knew from experience any help he tried to offer would only be rebuffed. Better to let Kid take his time and get inside on his own.

However, it didn't stop Shinichi from reaching out to grab a hold of Kid as he climbed over the windowsill. Kid stumbled at the unexpected contact, and instinctively, Shinichi wrapped his arm around Kid's waist to keep him stable, leaning the thief against him.

Kid smirked over at Shinichi. “Why, sensei, don't we usually wait until after you patch me up before we get to the fun?”

Shinichi didn't even notice the sexual innuendo, his hand had found something wet on Kid's jacket and he was staring at his red stained fingers with resignation. “Turn around,” he ordered as he lifted Kid's jacket up being careful not to pull at the wound.

Silently, Kid turned around and Shinichi quickly probed at the wound. “Gunshot, but no exit wound. Which means the bullet is still in there.” He cursed as he took in the angle. “Damn it, Kid, if it didn't nick your lungs it's going to be a miracle. Your heist was a good 15 miles away, what were you thinking coming all the way over here like that?” He dropped the jacket back down and wrapped his arm around Kid's waist.

“What can I say, you have the best bedside manner in the business?" Kid said flippantly, relaxing into Shinichi.

“Not to mention, you’ve been Kid for what, 10 years now?” Shinichi continued to rant as he slowly guided them towards the door. “Aren’t you getting a little tired of this? How many times am I going to have to patch you up before you get yourself killed over some stupid piece of jewelry?”

Kid leaned heavily against Shinichi as they made their way out of the bedroom and towards the spare room Shinichi had modified into a small clinic. “I can’t quit… not yet. I’m… still looking for something,” he said softly.

“Well, I certainly hope it’s worth it, especially since you’re keeping me from my bed,” Shinichi said tartly as they hobbled down the hallway. “You’re lucky I was even still up. What would you have done if I’d already gone to sleep?”

Snickering, Kid leaned against the wall a moment while Shinichi opened the other door. “Oh, probably died out there. Let you wake up to a corpse outside your window.”

Shinichi rolled his eyes as he led Kid to the examining table and helped him up. “That would have been fun to explain. No, officer, I don't know why the Kaitou Kid was here. I certainly didn't invite him.”

“Like you really would have called the police.” Kid said confidently as he toed his shoes off and took off his jacket. “I'm sure you know at least five people who could make... things disappear if you just ask them.” Kid's grin grew sharper. “After all, this neighborhood is very good at hiding things. Right, Doctor Edogawa?”

“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” he lied blandly as he cut through Kid’s shirt. “I told you I wasn’t a doctor the first time you came here, you’re the one who keeps on insisting that I treat you.”

Kid snorted but didn’t say a thing, something Shinichi was grateful for. There was more than a grain of truth in Kid’s accusation, but so far he’d been happy leaving things at pointed comments. Shinichi suspected at some point the thief’s curiosity was going to get the better of him and then, Shinichi would be left with no choice but to do something permanent about the thief. Shinichi didn’t want to do it, he rather enjoyed Kid’s company the few times a month the thief came by, either for medical attention or just to chat, but too much was at stake with this life he'd built to let Kid destroy it.

He turned away from the table, taking the bloodstain shirt with him and dropping it in the garbage container. “All right, Kid, turn around and lie on your stomach,” he said briskly as he prepared a syringe with anesthesia and walked back over to the table. “You ready?”

Kid nodded and closed his eyes, pillowing his head on his crossed arms. Shinichi laid his hand on Kid’s shoulder and injected the needle into his arm. “You should be out in a few minutes and when you wake up, everything will be fine,” Shinichi murmured as he softly brushed his hand through Kid’s hair.

Kid mumbled, “Thanks, sensei,” and Shinichi watched over him until his breath evened out. With a small sigh, he took one more caress and then started to prepare for the surgery.

And yes, that was deliberately left very vague. I may write a follow up to this ficlet that explains what exactly Shinichi is up to. *g*
