Alright... here's the first of 25 fics I'm writing for my half of the Kaito/Shinichi themes that Morgann and I are splitting.
Theme #31 - Exhausting and Hurt
-----------
“Kudo?!” Kid stared down at horror at the small, unmoving mass of blood and dirt that was curled up on the roof. If it wasn’t for that distinctive bowtie, he probably wouldn’t have even had given it a second glance as he raced across. Thank God for Kudo’s horrible sense of style.
He kneeled down next to the unresponsive body, quickly feeling for a pulse. “Still alive,” he breathed in relief. Taking care not to jar anything, he started to stretch out the body to give himself a better idea of how badly hurt the small detective was.
Kudo finally started to stir when Kid lifted his head off his arms and blinked for several moments. “Kid,” Kudo rasped out, “Get out of here.”
“Ssshhh,” Kid murmured as he continued to cautiously probe Kudo’s limbs, checking for breaks. He hissed as he realized that every finger on Kudo’s right hand was broken in at least two places. He didn’t like the way his leg was swollen either nor the gashes on Kudo’s temple “I… I’m going to call Mori-kun, okay?” he said unsteadily.
“No!” Kudo struggled to sit up and Kid instinctively pushed him back down. Not that it took much; the detective had no strength left in him. “You can’t… they’ll kill her!”
“Who?” Kid ask sharply, gaze dancing around the roof as if the people who’d hurt Kudo would suddenly appear from the grey shadows.
“Those guys… the ones who shrunk me.” Kudo closed his eyes as he leaned against Kid’s leg. “They figured out I was Kudo, don’t know how. Grabbed me coming home from school a few days ago. But they just couldn’t kill me, they wanted to know who else knew…” He suddenly started coughing, his body shuddering with the force and Kid held Kudo tight through it. After a final wheeze, he continued, “I managed to escape… they must have let me, really. Probably figured I’ll go wherever I think it’s safe.” He weakly lifted his left hand to the gashes on the side of his face. “They stuck a transmitter in me… I managed to get it out… dunno if that’s the only one, but they haven’t showed up here yet.”
“You did this…” Kid swallowed his bile as he took in the blood and skin under Kudo’s fingernails. “And then you what, came up here to die?”
“Seemed like a good plan. Can’t go to a hospital, they’ll find me… can’t go to Ran’s, they probably expecting that… no going home… Professor Agasa and Ai should have taken off as soon as I disappeared… So, at least here, I could die on my own instead of in one of their labs.”
“Sorry, kiddo, not gonna happen, not on my watch.” Kid unbuttoned his jacket and very carefully, slid it around Kudo’s body and wrapped him up in the cloak.
Kudo dully spoke up as Kid took off his top hat and tossed it in the corner, “I always thought you had more a sense of self-preservation than this.”
“And I always thought you wouldn’t give up like this either,” Kid retorted as he stuck his monocle in a hidden pocket in his pants. He carefully gathered Kudo closed and wasn’t surprised to find out he barely weighed anything.
Kudo continued to stare vacantly around from his white cocoon as they made their way down the fire escape. Once at ground level, he twisted so he could look up at Kid. “Where are we going?”
“Home,” Kid said in a cheerful voice he certainly didn’t feel as he nodded at a fellow pedestrian who turned to gawk at them.
“You can’t!” Kudo said in a panicky voice as he pushed against Kid, trying to get free. “Weren’t you listening to me?”
Kid just held on tighter until Kudo’s struggles lost what little fight they’d had and Kudo had slumped back against his chest. “We’re not going to your home, we’re going to mine.”
“Kid?” Kid almost laughed at the incredulous note in Kudo’s voice, but as he suspected he wouldn’t stop if he started, he held it in.
“It’s Kaito, actually,” Kaito said instead. “I figured if you’re going to be staying with me for a while, you should know my real name.”
“Kaito,” Kudo repeated softly and Kaito had to blink back tears as he recognized that wondering tone. It didn’t mean much of anything, but at least he knew that Kudo was starting to take interest in things around him, even if it was just at finding out Kid’s real identity.
“That’s my detective. Knew those bastards wouldn’t keep you down for good,” he murmured and he hugged Kudo tight for several minutes, heedless of the people around him. And Kudo leaned back into the embrace, as best he could, a small smile on his face.
