Starting Chantix today

Apr 21, 2009 08:22

I took my first pill this morning. Chantix is a quit smoking medicine. Basically, it works by blocking nicotine from attaching to your brain receptors. That way, you stop receiving any pleasure from cigarettes at all-even as the drug, snuggling up to those receptors the same way nicotine does, reduces withdrawal cravings and unleashes a happy little wash of dopamine to boot. The first week of the drug you are supposed to continue smoking and while you are taking it, it sort of makes the cigarettes taste really bad, making you want to smoke less till you just don't want it at all.

So yay, happy to be getting some help quitting. I do love the act of smoking, but I hate what it does to my body and I particularly hate the smell of it on me and in my truck.

What I find really scary is all of the news I keep reading about it. Depression, gastrointestinal problems, trouble sleeping, lucid dreaming, anti-social behavior and suicidal thoughts are high on the side-effects list. I've been reading article after article about the problems people had while taking it and even for several weeks after they stopped. It makes me really anxious. I knew a bit of this going into it, but quitting seemed more important. I hope I end up in the lower percentage of people who don't get bothered by the side effects.

In the event that I do though, I would sure appreciate it if my friends would point it out to me. I will try my best not to be offended if you tell me I'm being mean, moody or seem distant or depressed. This may not be apparent to me. I don't know yet how it will affect me.

I want to quit successfully as we are hoping to get pregnant next month. Smoking and babies just don't mix. Yes, I said next month. Flipside conception hopefully!

Anywho, I guess I just wanted to let my friends know what's going on in advance and apologize if I get moody, angry, depressed, mean or nasty. I hope that doesn't happen.

Let the ride begin. I hope I at least get to experience dreaming. It's only about once a year I even remember a dream I've had, so that should be entertaining.

DAY 2: No problems, no side effects, still feeling the urge to smoke. I kind of want one right now, but it's only because I'm drinking a really good latte. If only this medicine would make me want to vomit if I took a drag. That would totally work.
