I'm really pissed off at work right now. It's like I don't know what my boss wants from me. First off the editorial staff is all of a sudden given the special sections (after they fired the lady who did them all herself) and they don't pay us extra OR train us. The one things they want to make sure we DO do is make sure we get all our special section stuff in early.
So I do that. I'm on top of it every month and I am doing this shiz without much trouble. It's a little stressful to rely on free-lancers considering you never know when they will turn stuff in or even call to communicate with you, but I'm getting by.
Last month, when I produced my special section, I got backlash because of one RIDICULOUS sentence that was in the cover story. Apparently it pissed some people off. I didn't write it but its my fault because I'm in charge of that section. On top of that my editor, the EDITOR of the paper isn't taking any of the blame even though he could have very well read that article ahead of time and said something about that ONE sentence.
And now this month. I just finished gathering all my stuff for the YOUR HOME section and he comes up to me and is like, "Your cover isn't local enough."
"Well we interviewed someone the moving assistance lady helped from Los Altos," I said. "She offers her services to Los Altans."
"Yeah but they are FORMER Los Altans, they live in Cupertino now," he said.
"I know, if you read the article that is the business she is in. Helping seniors cosolidate their homes and move into retirement communities. Such as that very posh one in Cupertino so many Los Altans choose when they move out of Los Altos."
"It's just the cover should have a more local angle," he said. "Maybe there is someone from Los Altos she is helping now?"
"Also IN THE STORY is a reference to the couple she is helping currently. Moves are a big deal and she can only help one client at a time."
He looks at me, doesn't know what else to say. Tucks his you know what between his legs and walks away like the passive editor he is.
ARGH. If you have an issue with my cover story talk to me before it is written. I have had this article planned for well over a month now! If you take any problems with my cover or the way I do this EXTRA section (which I DO NOT get paid for) then tell me before I work on the damn section!!!!!!!!!!!
Critique after the fact does nothing to help me or improve the section. Hey boss, maybe if I get a FREAKIN' raise I will work a little harder at "localizing" the cover. Till then, this is all you get.
