have you fooled around much with layer blend modes? there are a lot of layer blend tricks that can do interesting stuff like this too. you can subtract out some of the lost lowlights from your final transform and render using like layer difference modes.

I've fooled around a lot with them, but didn't want to overload this image with them, since it's supposed to be for Intermediate level icon/graohic makers :)
