the new york times recently ran an interesting piece about how your room/apartment/house (depending on which demographic you fall in) impacts the potentiality of an impending relationship.
apparent DON'Ts:
1) stuffed animals (which i have)
2) chewed-up fingernails on the bedside table (i'm worse, i have a small jar of my own fingernails)
3) a b+w Robert Doisneau photograph of a kissing couple (ok i don't have this, but it's making me want one)
ok. so basically, your place says a lot about you. i think my room says about half the person i am, because i don't have time/money/space to decorate. i guess that also says that i'm lazy and still living with parents (my bank account is laughing at you).
these are my DOs:
1) light source are lamps, NOT overhead lights. i want to bask in the warm glow of your home, not feel like i'm romance shopping at the discount store.
2) plain and simple looking sheets on a low bed
3) mismatched rugs that match
4) i don't know why i like this, but i've always been fond of the idea of having shelves of books behind the bed and above the bed frame. this bookshelf will ideally contain works by Dostoevsky, Tolstoy and anything else i haven't read.
5) a stocked pantry
6) and this is deal-maker for me: an entire DVD library of Woody Allen and Joseph Mankiewicz movies.
i have to say that i've never really been all that impressed with gadget-infested homes. i think this can be attributed to my own declining reliance on technology. i am able to survive on the most minimal electronics (minimal denoting for most basic and practical usage). currently, i own:
sony ericsson mobile phone
compaq laptop
3rd generation ipod
120GB external HD (can this even be considered as a gadget?)
wireless logitech mouse
sennheiser headphones
sony earphones (at work)
canon digital camera (which isn't really mine)
panasonic cordless phone
these are the only electronics i can recount possessing.
