So after working 8 hours/day at my regular job, I'm supposed to come home and work MORE? I don't think so. I'd rather come home and relax and do activities that I enjoy. Maybe that's watching some TV programs or playing some video games or whatever. Life is too fucking short to spend that much of it WORKING.
The mindset is one that instead of working for someone else, you come home and work for yourself, or at least do something constructive. There is a big difference between working for someone else and working for yourself. Also, in the blog, the author started their own business in the evenings that after a while replaced their normal 8-5 job. I think you missed that point.
My additional point was it's not all about work, it's about actively doing and creating, instead of being a passive vegetable. I consider playing video games a hobby which is not the same thing as mindlessly watching reality TV. Well, at least not until you start having to watch commercials to play them.
That is a great blog. At least from what I could tell looking at it quickly. I can't think of one single show that I have to watch. We don't tivo and if there is a show I want to watch, I can borrow it from Blockbuster/Netflix. OK, I'm usually a season or two behind - oh well.
My family and I typically spend ~3-4 hours each night with the TV on. However, I am usually working on my work-related projects while doing this.
I find I can get a lot of work done while dedicating 25% of my attention to the TV. This gives me enough information about the show we're watching such that I can interact with my family during commercials (or after the show) regarding what we 'watched' (for some definition of watched)
