This is my 2nd installment in the
Romantic Fics Challenge! ^^
I don't know why, but lately, I've been in a writer-y mood, so I've been writing a lot of new material! XD
Anways, here is the first version I wrote of Black & White, which turned out super angsty for some reason...I will also post the second version, which is much more cutesy! ^^;; It would be interesting to know which version is "better"! Both versions were partially inspired by G.NA's song,
"Black & White". :)
Black & White (Version 1 - Angst version)
The first time…
“Just get out!”
Morimoto Ryutaro slammed his bedroom door shut, throwing himself onto his bed as the laughter of his younger brother, Shintaro, tinkled mockingly as it faded gradually away to nothingness. He balled his hands into fist, and beat them into his pillow, all the while letting loose a string of angry curses that bounced off the walls of his room, creating a cacophony of noise. But he didn’t care. All Ryutaro could think about was his hate. He hated Shintaro for having the ability to make him feel completely worthless in a matter of minutes. He hated having a younger brother who was able to upstage him seemingly without much effort. More than anything, he hated himself for being weak. No matter what Shintaro said about him, Ryutaro couldn’t help but take those biting words to heart, even though he knew that his little brother said the things he did as a way to intentionally kill what little self-esteem he already had.
He didn’t want to admit it, but those words hurt.
Ryutaro felt himself going numb as he buried his head in his pillow. Unwanted tears started rolling down his face, and he felt a sense of depression sinking in - the other JUMP members had always said that he was a negative person - so much so that he completely didn’t notice when another presence infiltrated his room, opening his room’s door quietly and joining him on the bed.
The youngest JUMP member felt himself jerk upwards reflexively when he unexpectedly felt someone’s hand rest on his shoulder. He turned and his eyes widened when saw Chinen Yuri sitting there next to him on the bed. “C-Chii?” Ryutaro gasped, his face reddening in shame as he hurriedly tried to wipe away the traces of his tears with the sleeve of his shirt. “What are you doing here? This is my room, you know.”
“Yeah,” murmured Chinen softly, “I know that, Ryu-chan. But I heard you and your brother screaming at each other from next door, so I wanted to make sure that you were okay.”
Ryutaro stared at Chinen in disbelief. This caring, mature Chinen was completely different from the mischievous, spoilt little kid Chinen that Ryutaro was used to seeing when he was around the other JUMP members. Despite the fact that Chinen was actually older than him by two years, Ryutaro had always seen Chinen as being at least “mentally younger” than he was, especially since he had now outgrown the little acrobat. Seeing him as a senior was almost beyond comprehension for him.
“You were worried about me?” he asked, trying to keep the confusion out of his voice.
Chinen said gently, “Of course. We’re both JUMP members, after all. We must stick together!”
Ryutaro nodded glumly. “Yeah, that’s true, I guess...” He hugged his pillow to his chest and put his head down it again, sighing. He felt Chinen move on the bed next to him, shifting his weight as he did. But, even so, he was totally unprepared when Chinen suddenly wrapped his arms around him and laid his head on Ryutaro’s back.
“Chii?” he asked uncertainly, as he felt warmth spread throughout his body. He wasn’t sure if the warmth was because of his close physical contact with Chinen or if it was something more.
“Don’t worry about it,” said Chinen reassuringly, not moving from his current hugging position. “I just thought you needed someone to care for you.”
And that was the first time when Ryutaro felt that there was a something a little different about the mini-acrobat named Chinen, something special that he hadn’t noticed before.

The second time…
Ryutaro stormed off stage, just about ready to throttle his younger brother. It was in the middle of the TEN JUMP concert, and he couldn’t believe what had just happened, how Shintaro had humiliated him in front of all those people. Ryutaro had reached out for the heart-shaped piece of cardboard thinking that his younger brother was finally showing genuine feelings of thankfulness toward him. Only to have that hope snatched away when Shintaro threw the board out into the audience, making him look like a fool. How could he have allowed himself to be tricked into believing that there was still some sort of brotherly love between them? Was he really that much of a moron?
As Ryutaro continued to berate himself for his naïve stupidity, he caught sight of Shintaro in his shiny pink and white costume, the one that made him seem like an innocent little victim when he was really a demon in disguise.
“You!” he growled, a fearsome expression on his face, advancing on his younger brother. Shintaro took one look at his face, and dashed away, clearly catching on to Ryutaro’s murderous mood.
However, just as Ryutaro was about to run after Shintaro, he felt a pair of arms come out of nowhere, holding him back from the chase.
“Let go of me!” he shouted, trying to get away from whoever was restraining him. “Let me at him! I’m going to kill that little devil!”
“No!” his captor cried. “I can’t let you!”
After a few minutes’ struggle, Ryutaro managed to break free from the person’s surprisingly strong grip. When he did, he grabbed the person’s arm roughly and pulled him around to face him, ignoring the pained yelps that the person made in response.
He was taken aback when he saw that his captor had been Chinen.
Ryutaro immediately let go of his friend’s arm, and Chinen hurriedly massaged the place where Ryutaro had grabbed him, whimpering slightly at the pain. At this, Ryutaro turned away, shame-faced. He couldn’t believe that he had just hurt his fellow JUMP member.
Feeling as if he had committed a horrible crime, Ryutaro managed to ask, “Are you okay, Chii?”
He heard Chinen respond in a small voice, “Yeah, I’m okay, Ryu-chan.”
They waited there, awkwardly, as each tried to put their thoughts into words. Finally, they both blurted at the same time, “I’m sorry!”
“You’re sorry?” exclaimed Ryutaro in incredulously. “I’m the one who hurt you!”
Chinen nodded, his head bobbing up and down rapidly, and said, his words coming out in a rush, “I’m sorry that I came in between you and your brother! I just couldn’t take seeing you like that! That’s not the Ryutaro I know. The Ryutaro I know isn’t violent! He’s gentle and kind, with his heart set on making his dreams come true. At times, he may be a little hard on himself, but that just means he cares about what he’s doing. He’s a good person.”
Ryutaro stared at Chinen, unsure how to take Chinen’s words. It had been a long time since someone had said something that wasn’t ridiculing him or criticizing him. He wasn’t used to someone openly recognizing him for being a good person. He had spent too long being overshadowed by everyone else he knew.
When Ryutaro didn’t respond, Chinen went over to him and hugged him, putting his head on Ryutaro’s chest. “It’ll be okay, Ryu-chan. Let Shintaro be. He’s not even worth it anyways.”
Ryutaro slowly put his arms around the shorter JUMP member, wordlessly returning his hug. Nevertheless, it didn’t matter if Ryutaro hadn’t said anything; Chinen seemed to understand what he needed.
They stayed there, in that position, for a long time, until they were called up to perform “Ganbaretsugo!”. Then, they broke apart without looking at each other and headed for the stage like robots on autopilot.
This was the second time when Ryutaro realized how special Chinen was to him.
* * *
Chinen was trying to do his homework when, all of a sudden, he heard a crash next door. Putting down his pencil immediately, he went outside into the hallway and craned his ear towards the other room, hoping to figure out what was going on. He heard shouting, and felt his heart break apart when he realized that those pained shouts belonged to Ryutaro.
Without a second thought, Chinen burst into the room, throwing open Ryutaro’s bedroom door. Ryutaro was sitting on his bed, a textbook open in his lap, while Shintaro was standing at the foot of it with his hands on his hips. Both Morimoto brothers stared back at Chinen in shock; this new disturbance evidently unexpected to both of them.
“Don’t you dare speak to Ryu-chan like that again, Morimoto Shintaro!” yelled Chinen as he felt anger rising up in him. “I don’t care if you think you’re better than he is or if you think he’s lame! Ryu-chan is your older brother and you should respect that! It’s about time you started treating him better like the good person that he is! Now, get out of his room and LEAVE HIM BE!”
Shintaro stared at Chinen - this was the first time he had ever seen Chinen so furious before - and ran out of the room. Chinen sighed, his shoulders collapsing a little, as he leaned against the nearby wall. He was glad that the confrontation was now over. Ryutaro put his textbook aside, and went over to him.
When Ryutaro reached the mini-acrobat, he immediately hugged the little body close to him. “Thank you, Chii,” he murmured into Chinen’s hair.
Chinen smiled happily as he hugged Ryutaro back. “It’s okay, Ryu-chan. I just wanted to speak my mind, that’s all.”
“But still…Thank you anyways. I wish I could be like you,” Ryutaro admitted. “I wish I could be loud and brave too, so I could stand up to Shintaro.”
Chinen gave Ryutaro a little squeeze. “What are you talking about, Ryu-chan? I wish I could be soft-spoken like you! I thought I was being obnoxious!”
Ryutaro drew back a little, looking down at the mini-acrobat in surprise. “You, obnoxious? Are you serious? You saved my life back there!”
Chinen objected, “No, I didn’t! Besides, you’re already becoming like me!” Ryutaro looked back at him blankly, making Chinen giggle. “See, this time, you hugged me, instead of the other way around! The old Ryu-chan wouldn’t have done that.”
As Chinen smiled cutely back at him, Ryutaro could feel his face reddening in embarrassment. “Oh, shut up,” he muttered. He looked down at the smiling boy in his arms and felt something stir in his heart. Without thinking, Ryutaro bent down and gently pressed his lips to Chinen’s forehead.
“I love you, Chii,” he whispered shyly.
Chinen blushed, a light pink glow spreading across his cheeks.
“I love you, too, Ryu-chan.”
