Snowflake Challenge - Day 6

The Challenge

In your own space, rec at least 3 fanworks you thought you wouldn't like (because they weren't your fandom or they pushed against your boundaries or you thought you just wouldn't be interested) and that you ended up loving.

I can only think of two.  I don't really push my boundaries too much I guess.

Cartography

It's Loghain/Cousland (blech) and it's really long, so I might have overlooked it, but the language is beautiful and this is one of my favorite fics, ever.  Her Elissa is really complex and difficult.  She has relationships with Alistair and Leliana but they never go anywhere; the only person who understands her is a bitter old man.

One of my favorite parts:

There's a trail of things she knows about Alistair, leading back from whatever place she has the memory of them buried; all the little things, so small when you first learn them but seem so large now, towering beside her. Like the fact that he sleeps on his left side. And the fact that he doesn't like beetles; that he takes his tea with milk and honey and has a sweet tooth; that he still prays almost every night but has never actually thought it makes a difference; that he is self-conscious about his height and that when he was six or seven, he was in love with a servant's daughter who locked him up in the kitchen storage.

There are so many things.

And she doesn't know what to do with the trail, the path. She can't follow it and it doesn't go away and when he looks at her now, she wonders when it will stop.

So pretty I can't even. Breaking up is hard to do.

Moving on, another Cousland fic....

Here Without You

I usually avoid King Alistair/Cousland fics pretty hard, because they tend to be syrupy or trite, but Dasque's is great.  It's bigger on plot than most fan fictions, which I appreciate, and her Elissa has a more complicated and realistic relationship with Alistair than most.  There's a lot of wish fulfillment in it (Warden babies!  Alistair and Elissa get back together after The Dumping!) but isn't that what fan fiction is all about?

Yes.  Yes it is. XD
