Writing Progress Yesterday: I wrote about 350 words on the short story; I’m now at about 4.5 thousand words and 16 pages. For the novel, I finished another Character interview and had to set up a timeline for the back-story. A number of my characters (the ones who will spend the most time on stage) are extremely long lived, and since one of my leads (who is one of these long-lived people) is functionally an orphan there’s a lot of familial politics about who is in charge of her vs. who she is best suited to live with etc. Hence, I was having a lot of trouble as I was interviewing characters and they would tell me things like, I married so-and-so when I was 245 and she was 231 trying to get them to remember how old everyone else was at that point. In the process, I discovered that because they’re longer lived they have a different system of relating to time than the more human characters. I mean, they use years as a cycle of seasons, but only peripherally.

In other news, I’m winging the new job, which turns out to be shorter term than I’d really like, but it’s good nonetheless. It requires tons of computer/internet work-from-home, and yesterday I was between computers. I knew my current beast wasn’t going to be suitable over the long haul, and had a new one coming, which I will have today, but last night the old one decided to start freezing up on me for no good reason - except that it’s old. So, I’ll be doing lots of computational linguistics training tonight after the day-job.
