without the thousand-dollar shoes

Natalie remarked last night that it seemed as if Gotham City had been based on Moscow. I think she might be right. there are lights everywhere and yet all of Moscow's streets, buildings, and inhabitants somehow manage to seem dark.

we arrived last night from Saint Petersburg. the seven-hour train ride was quite pleasant (although it was disconcerting to realize we had only traveled about an inch on our map of Russia). it would be difficult to describe the neighborhood of the hostel we've just left... the closest I can come is to say that it resembled a neighborhood in post-WWII Germany that had been on the receiving end of some heavy shelling. I will not miss the aging local men in the hostel kitchen who without fail, upon learning my name, exclaimed "Jessica! Parker! Sex and City!!" and then forced me to drink vast quantities of cheap Russian beer. okay, maybe not forced.

the day after tomorrow we leave on a trans-siberian to Irkutsk, a five-day ride without a shower or an internet connection but with plenty of amazing scenery.
