This just in: Bar Study blows. They've finally finished teaching us stuff, and now it's time to cram it into our little brains. I'm getting batter at spotting the issues. Now if I could just remember The Law that goes along with them. Hopefully the next two weeks will take care of that.
In other news, I had planned to move to Wilsonville, one of Oregon's stateliest cities after the Bar. Now that's kind of up in the air. I put in an application at a place in Wilsonville at the end of last month, only to find out last Thursday that I'd been rejected due to my criminal history. Yes, you read that right criminal history. Now, I've been the subject of two background checks over the last 2 years. One to work for the federal government last year and one for my Bar application. This is the first I've ever heard about my "criminal history." After discussing it with the apartment folks, it seems as though someone arrested in Minnesota has used my name (along with 20+ others (my personal favorite is "X. Midnight")) and birthday (along with four others). Normally this wouldn't have been a big deal, except that my social security number allegedly matched the persons. Cue my freak-out. After all, it's my freaking SSN.
I thought that was a bit weird since I'd checked my credit report a couple weeks ago and all of my debts were my 100% legitimately mine. On Friday, calling around, I discovered that the arrested person, while using my name and birth date, in fact had no SSN associated with his arrest records. My suspicion is that the company that the apartment complex uses is incompetent. Part of me wants to call it off and find another apartment, but there are two reasons not to do that. First of all it's not a good time. Second, I have no idea whether the company the next apartment complex I decide to try will actually use someone competent. So it seems best to get this cleared up right now.
To that end, I had my fingerprints taken on Friday and sent them to Minnesota, where after examining them, the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension will presumably tell me that I am not the arrested party, which I already no, since I've never BEEN to Minnesota. The apartment complex has been so kind as to have my background check re-run. Presumably this will clear up the matter, but I'm not confident. Anyway, I told them that if it came back saying I had a criminal history, I wanted the name, address, and phone of their screening company, because I'd sort it out with them.
I'm still waiting to hear back.
