Bad news are bad
You know that Things are Wrong when newspapers inform you that:
+ A retired High Ranking Army Officer is hired by the municipality government to create and command a new security force, separate from the already existing 3 (Nation, State and Municipality) public police forces.
+ Said retired High Ranking Army Officer is kidnapped, tortured and murdered, alongside with the municipal president's nephew, who happened to be his assistant.
+ The next day, his funeral takes place in Mexico City. The President assists, as do the Army different branches' big guys and the Internal Security Ministry.
+ Two days later, the Army steps in and takes over the municipal police force.
+ The first day, every municipal policeman/woman has to bring their weapons for them to be crosschecked.
+ The second day, the municipal police force's chief is sent on a plane to Mexico City. It soon becomes public that he's being accused of having a part in the murders.
+ The third day, the state police force's chief becomes temporary commander of the municipality police forces too. He orders the former chief's office to be sealed until the army is able to gather all needed evidence.
+ The fourth day becomes public that the former's police chief car-turned-patrol had a robbery report. Three police officers fail to show up for the morning's list.
+ The fifth day, the Army informs three men and a woman have been apprehended; one of them is a municipal policeman, another was a policeman. Eight police officers fail to show up for the morning's list.
+ The sixth day, a list of four more suspects becomes public. Eighteen police members fail to show up for the morning's list. There are no further announcement as to how many police officers have disappeared.
+ The seventh day becomes public that the municipal forcer's chief former history, which included criminal links, was known among those who ratified his appointment. Many of them refused to ratify him the first two times, yet no one complained again when the municipal president insisted on hiring him.
+ The second week, the municipal jail's alcaide is sent on a plane to Mexico City. It is later known that he had known criminal links.
For those curious: the municipality is Benito Juarez, best know for its capital city, Cancun. Over 50% of the state's population lives in Cancun. Over 10% of the tourism related national income comes from Cancun's area. How did this happen? Why did we allow it to happen? There are many causes, but one of them relates to ... democracy. Not exactly, but I know no better word for it. See: the National government party is the PAN; the State government party is the PRI; the Municipality government party is the PRD.
Neither the Federation not the State interfered until things got Wrong. Because a) now they can say 'see? you'd have been better if we governed you'; and b) those who could have said or done anything earlier choose not to, or were not allowed to, because Shit Would Happen -- anything can become a Political Battle in places like Cancun. Because these places' governments can complain about the Nation and State's governments being against them, no matter what they do or they fail to do. It might be true, it might not ... the truth is, it doesn't matter. The result? Everybody has to be extra careful in what they say or do, in what they allow and what they complain about.
It makes me *aaaaargh*. I hate politics. I hate criminals too, but I hate public workers turned criminals more.
