December Brown Grass

Dec 28, 2011 23:55

Sunny today. Just a little bit breezy.

Mom didn't have to work today. Just not enough rooms to justify having a laundry person come in.

I never thought I'd run the lawn mower in december. Well, I'd forgotten to run the gas out of the push mower. So, I chopped down areas that were overgrown. Took forever to do so. I even mowed around the hayfield with the lawn tractor a couple times, too. The lawn tractor still has gas in it. I almost felt like I could mow down the hayfield and not run out of gas. Exaggerating, I know. I think everyone who drove by must have thought I was crazy.

Used the big tractor to haul some more big branches. One was easy, the other did a great big snap before coming down. I'll probably do some sawing, tomorrow.

Time for bed. *hugs*

They used duckboards where it gets wet and muddy in the path.

Word of the Day for Wednesday December 28, 2011

duckboard • \DUK-bord\ • noun
: a boardwalk or slatted flooring laid on a wet, muddy, or cold surface -- usually used in plural

Did you know?
The word "duckboard" was created during the early 20th century to describe the boards or slats of wood laid down to provide safe footing for the soldiers of World War I across wet or muddy ground in trenches or camps. The original duckboards didn't always work as intended though. According to one soldier, duckboards came by their name because someone walking on wet duckboards was liable to slide off them much like water slides off a duck's back. Today's duckboards appear in all kinds of places -- from marshes to the floors of saunas. The word "duck" itself has been part of the English language since the days of Old English, when it had the form "dūce."
