I figured out what I do on twitter. I sing. Seems I take the bird metaphor a little too literally. This morning is the theme song to Firefly. I loved the TV show, was disappointed by (but still loved) the movie. The character development and interactions are confused in the movie. I had watched the series first so I caught the subtexts, but people who hadn't watched the show were not going to understand anything.
I was especially disappointed by the muddle around Inara and Captain Reynolds. It seemed an unnecessary writing/directing muddle and not a clear exposition of characters' confusion as it was supposed to be. A lot of their relationship is left up in the air at the end of the movie, which is just life. But one of their tensions is resolved as Reynolds proves himself to be more than a pirate, as Inara had goaded/inspired him to be.
The other major tension which is not resolved is Inara's profession -- she's a high priced whore, a licensed Companion. In the series she had left Serenity for a monastery in order to practice non-attachment. Again, it's unclear whether this is due to her misinterpretation of Buddhism and/or if the Guild practices some neo-Buddhism with an emphasis on lack of emotional attachment to persons and/or if it's because she's afraid of her feelings for Reynold.
Looks like I'll be spending the day in the Firefly wikis . . .
