work vs. play

Part 1:

You can see the top of my desk in places.  This is practically unheard of and might take some getting used to.

Part 2:

We have brand new, shiny, consistent rules for our study rooms.  That say that the study rooms are for educational purposes only.  Not playing games or watching movies.

O.o

I was not aware that playing and learning were two mutually exclusive categories.  Someone might want to alert the entire field of early childhood education about that interesting fact.  Same goes for audio-visual materials not being educational and passing that fact along to the people that teach/major in communications as well as the people that purchase educational dvds for our branch.

I did mention that we are going to be asking the Friends for money to buy games for the kids to (quietly, please, please, mostly quietly) play with in the library, yes?  Somehow these nice, shiny, consistent rules do not seem to be very consistent with the overall philosphy of our branch for the past several years, not to mention the overall trends in (American?) public libraries.

*facepalm*

Really, this isn't that big of a deal in the immediate sense.  It will get fixed.  Parents will be able to check out board games and play them with their kids in the study rooms in the children's area.  It just bugs me on a more fundamental level that someone would even put that on paper, much less for the situation to get to the point that those rules are being passed out to all 50 branch employees for them to comment on.  sheesh.

I mean, I'm all for employee feedback and delegating tasks, but it seems to me a manager's job involves making sure that even proposed rules for patron and employee conduct are in line with the stated goals of the library.

Part 3:

I want to go on vacation so so so badly.  (and standuponit 's posts are not helping with this!) This is making me feel frustrated and like a complete lazy dork because I just had a decently long trip a few months ago - and because I have no idea if I can afford another one so soon.  And becuase I am feeling guilty that I think I may skip Thanksgiving in CO with family for camping by myself elsewheres.  Also, because I really DON'T want to go now, I want the heat to GO AWAY so I can start hiking again and be able to do decently long hikes when I do go to cool places.  bah!

that's why they pay you, play, learn
