As I prepare for my final project on Clyde Street, for Methods of Community Design class, I have been informed of terrible news. The "Clyde Street Pirate", a homeless man, who stood outside of the Liquor Store for as long as I can remember has passed away from a heart attack. In my site analysis, I mentioned how the Pirate, known to family as friends as Chris Doyle, has been is an Iconic figure along Clyde Street for all of Haligonians.
Clyde Street's proximity to Spring garden has been shadowed in by new high rises and is going through change. Having a person like the pirate creates a mayor type presence to the street, adding familiarity, and his strange behavior adds excitement and humor. The street without his presence will not be the same on a community level.
Loosing him as well as the affordable multi unit homes to condos in the area, really does put the future of the street into the present. Changing my model for the street completely. Maybe affordable housing in his honor would be well suited.
Fare the well ol' Clyde Street Pirate.
