Chapter 5. Save you

Pierre’s PoV.

Next morning I woke up to my alarm clock. I turned it off and got out of the bed. I would have another day in the torture chamber. There wasn’t anything good in school anymore, now that David wasn’t there anymore. I put on my clothes, put my hair a bit better and headed downstairs to eat breakfast and drink coffee. After that I started heading to school.

School day went by slowly, but miraculously I managed to avoid my bullies. I saw them in the cafeteria, so I decided not to eat and ran away into the toilet. After school I literally ran out of the school building and the gates. Only when I was a bit further away from the school, I stopped to pant and catch my breath. Suddenly my phone informed me that I got a new text message. It was David, who told me that he had already gotten out of the home school. I suggested that we meet at the Starbucks nearby. David agreed to it and I started heading towards Starbucks.

When I arrived at the Starbucks, I saw that David was already waiting for me there. A smile appeared on my face.

“You had a bit shorter day today than yesterday”, stated as I walked over to him.

“Yeah, it was a nice surprise”, he said. I nodded and hugged him tightly. He answered my hug, seeming surprised again.

“I was pleasantly surprised that I’m able to avoid the bullies. I just can’t go to lunch and I have to run away from school”, I said. David looked shocked.

“You haven’t eaten anything all day?!” he exclaimed, sounding a lot like my mom again.

“I did eat breakfast before going to school”, I said quietly, knowing that it wasn’t enough.

“We’re not going to Starbucks then. We’re gonna go to eat somewhere before going to the cinema”, David said determinedly.

“Okay”, I agreed.

“Where do you wanna go to eat?” David asked.

“I don’t really care”, I said and shrugged.

“Well, there’s McDonald’s. Should we go there?” David asked, pointing towards McDonald’s. I nodded.

“They have decent coffee too if we want to have coffee as well”, David said and smiled at me. I nodded again and we started heading towards the McDonald’s.

We stepped inside to McDonald’s and instantly the smell of the hamburgers and fries surged into my nose.

“Suddenly I’m a bit hungry too”, David stated and grinned at me. I smiled at him.

“What do you want? I’ll pay”, I offered.

“No, you don’t have to pay for my food”, David refused.

“I know, but I want to”, I said.

“Fine”, David sighed finally.

“I’ll take the veggie burger meal”, he continued.

“With coke?” I asked to make sure, although I was pretty sure about the answer. David nodded.

“You can grab the ketchup and stuff as I’ll order for us”, I said and smiled at him before walking over to the counter.

“What can I get for you?” a young girl, who had probably just gotten out of high school, asked from me with a smile.

“I’ll have one Big Mac meal and a McVegan meal. Both with coke”, I said. She nodded.

“Anything else?” she asked. I shook my head. She told me the price and I paid for the meals.

After she had collected everything on the tray, I thanked her and headed towards David who was waiting for me. We went to sit in one of the booths next to the window.

“Thanks. You didn’t have to pay for me, but thanks anyway”, David said and smiled at me. I just shook my head dismissively. I had already told him that I wanted to pay so I didn’t want to say it again. I turned to look at him again and noticed that he was already looking at me. That didn’t stop me admiring David’s beautiful face. I liked how his black hair framed his face and how his beautiful hazel eyes, that were looking back at me, twinkled as he smiled. We stared at each other for a while before David suddenly looked a bit flustered and turned to look at the food in front of us. I smiled.

“I’ll buy whatever you want to eat and drink at the cinema then”, he stated. I nodded, the smile still on my lips.

We silently ate our hamburgers. Although the McDonald’s still was far from quiet ‘cause even though it wasn’t even three pm, there were a lot of people, mostly teenagers, around us talking loudly with each other.

After eating we started heading towards the cinema. It was quite close to the McDonald’s so it didn’t take long for us to get there. We stayed further from the counters as we were thinking what we should go see.

“The next movie starts in half an hour, it’s a horror movie called The Frighteners. Should we go see it?” I asked as I looked at the list of movies.

“I don’t like horror movies. They’re too scary. Can’t we go see something else?” David answered and blushed as he admitted that he was scared of horror movies.

Could he even get any more cuter?

“What if I promise to protect you from the monsters? And you don’t have to look at the scariest parts”, I tried to persuade him.

“Why don’t we go see some comedy? Like we always do at your place”, David asked.

“That’s exactly why. We always watch them. Horror would be nice for a change”, I answered. I did like some horror movies, but mostly I just wanted an excuse to get closer to David. I kinda had figured out that he was scared of horror movies, before he even told me.

“Yeah, really nice…”, he muttered sarcastically.

“I guess we'll go see it then, but you’re gonna have to buy my ticket since it’s probably gonna give me nightmares”, David said. I smiled victoriously.

“Yeah, seems fair”, I said as we started heading towards the counter.

After telling the cashier what movie we would like to go to see, she showed us the seating map. We chose seats from the left side of the top row ‘cause at least at that moment there was many empty seats nearby. The closest taken seats were on the other side of the top row. After I had paid for the tickets, we went to the shop connected to the cinema to buy something to eat and drink.

“Do you want to eat a box of popcorn together?” David asked.

“Yeah, why not. And then something to drink”, I answered. David grabbed a box of popcorn from the cabinet and a bottle of coke for himself. I also decided to take a bottle of coke. We headed to the counter with the popcorn and drinks and this time David insisted on paying. After that we started heading towards the room where our movie would be shown.

The movie had barely started when I already felt David grabbing my arm and soon he hid his face on my shoulder. I smiled at myself in the dark room. Instead of him leaning to my shoulder I pulled him off me so I could pull him into a hug. That would probably make him feel more safe. I wasn’t scared at all ‘cause I had watched some horror movies, but I found it really cute that David was so scared of them. I was happy that David had finally agreed to see a horror movie ‘cause now I got to hold him in my arms for an hour or two.

David’s PoV.

Horror movies definitely weren’t my cup of tea, but I still didn’t regret coming to see a horror movie with Pierre. The movie has gone halfway through and I’ve been basically the whole time in Pierre’s hug. I felt safe and comfortable and sometimes I even had the courage to watch the movie for a while.

I turned to look at the movie again since it sounded like there wasn’t anything scary going on and took a handful of popcorn from the box. Apparently Pierre had the same idea ‘cause our hands met each other in the popcorn box. The touch of his hand made me feel like I got an electric shock and I quickly took my hand out of the box. I turned to look at Pierre and even though it was dark, I was able to see him smile at me. I smiled back at him as I blushed a little. Luckily he probably couldn’t notice my blush in the dark movie theater.

After I’ve eaten some popcorn and drank my coke, I went back to hug Pierre and hid my face in his fragrant shirt that had become very familiar to me over the past couple hours ‘cause there was a terrifying scene once again in the movie. I didn’t know if I imagined it, but I felt like he momentarily pulled me tighter against himself.

Finally the end credits appeared on the screen and Pierre loosened his grip on me. The room was still dark and I glanced at Pierre as I lifted my head from his shoulder. Our eyes met and we smiled at each other. I wanted to kiss him, but I didn’t have the courage.

The lights turned on and we got our things and started heading out of the movie theater.

“I’m sorry, I talked you into going to see a movie that was too scary”, Pierre said and smiled at me as we stepped out of the movie theater.

“It’s okay. Being in your protective hug made up for it”, I said and smiled embarrassed.

“Sorry, I’m such a coward that I can’t watch horror movies”, I continued.

“It’s okay. I think it’s just adorable”, Pierre said and smiled at me again. I nodded and smiled back at him. Wait a minute, did he just call me adorable? I glanced at him confusedly. Was it normal to think your friend was adorable or could he be into me more than a friend? I shook my head. No, it couldn’t be that. How could he have a crush on me?

We ended up going to a park nearby and sat on a bench there. It was about half past five so there were quite a lot of people. Some of them were just passing by and some of them were having a picnic on the grass, enjoying the beautiful autumn weather. The bench we had just sat on was the only bench in the park. We sat quietly for a while as I watched the other people in the park and Pierre was looking at his shoes. The silence wasn’t awkward though.

“So, what are you gonna do with school now? You’re just gonna stop eating at school and just keep running away from the assholes?” I asked as I remembered what Pierre had told me about his day. Instead of the other people, I turned to look at him worriedly and he turned to look at me instead of his shoes.

“I don’t know”, he answered quietly.

“It’s not like I eat much at school anyway ‘cause… Well, the food is what it is. So it’s not that much different if I stop eating there at all. Especially if that means I won’t get beaten up”, Pierre said. I nodded.

“I get it, but it would be good to eat. I don’t want to sound like your mom, but I’m just worried ‘cause I care about you”, I said quietly. Pierre nodded.

“Thanks”, he said.

“I actually want to skip school for the rest of the week, so I wouldn’t have to think about it”, Pierre said. I nodded.

“I know. I understand if you want to skip school, but I also believe that you can do these couple of days, even without eating if that’s what it takes”, I said and smiled at him.

“Skipping school isn’t just as fun alone as it was with you. I don’t really know what to do at home all day alone”, Pierre said and sighed.

“Well, it’s better than school anyway, right?” I asked.

“Yeah, definitely”, Pierre said and smiled at me.

We sat in the park for another hour before it started to get colder and we decided to start heading home.

Pierre wanted to walk me “home” again and soon we stood in front of Linda’s driveway again.

“Do you wanna meet me again tomorrow?” I asked.

“Yeah, sure. Do you wanna come over to my place again after school?” Pierre suggested and smiled at me.

“Yeah, I’d love to”, I answered and smiled back at him.

“I don’t know yet if I’ll skip school at all or if I’ll leave after lunch, but I guess I have to leave somewhere from home so my mom doesn’t realize I’m skipping school”, Pierre said. I nodded.

“What time does your school day end if you end up being there all day?” I asked.

“Um.. At three, if I remember correctly”, Pierre answered.

“Okay, well… Let me know what you decided. I’ll read your text when I get the chance”, I said. Pierre nodded.

“Um… Good night and I’ll see you tomorrow”, I said and grinned as I spread my arms for a hug. Pierre got my hint and hugged me.

“Good night and see you tomorrow”, he whispered in my ear, causing me goosebumps. Then he surprised me by kissing my cheek quickly. He started walking away without looking back, leaving me standing there dumbfounded and confusedly. What the hell was that? Pierre had already disappeared from my sight so I shrugged and started heading towards the front door.

After I got into the house, Linda came to the hallway to ask if I was hungry. I answered that not yet, but later I could maybe eat something. Linda said that I could take anything I wanted whenever I felt like it. I thanked and smiled at her before heading upstairs to do my homework and play some guitar.

Pierre’s PoV.

It was about half past seven when I came home. Mom and dad were in the living room watching TV when I came into the house.

“Good that you’re home already. I have something to tell you”, mom said and walked to me from the living room after we had greeted each other and I had taken my shoes off. I looked at her with a questioning look and she led me to sit by the kitchen table before sitting opposite to me.

“I wasn’t able to get you a tutor for home school”, she started. My expression darkened.

“Do I have to stay at that school?” I asked sadly.

“No, you won’t. I got you into Beaubois high school. You’ll start there on Monday. I’m gonna come to your school on Friday afternoon to talk about it more with your principal, so you’ll get a ride home on Friday. You can wait for me in front of the principal’s office after your school”, mom said. I nodded.

“I hope things will be better in the new school. I really tried to find you a tutor, but they’re really popular these days. I’m sorry”, mom continued with a genuinely apologetic expression on her face.

“It’s okay, I understand. Thanks for trying though. I’ll just have to hope for the best”, I said and smiled at her. Sure, I was sad I didn’t get a tutor, but it wasn’t mom’s fault. I believed she had tried her best so I would just have to live with it and be thankful that she even tried to find me a tutor.

Mom got up from the chair she had been sitting on and came to hug me tightly.

“Everything’s gonna be okay”, she said as she hugged me.

After we had pulled away from the hug, she went back to the living room to watch TV with my dad and I headed into my room.

In my room I took my phone out of my pocket and searched David’s number. It beeped a couple of times until he answered it.

“Hi, you miss me already?” David said and I could hear him smile. I chuckled.

“Yeah, sure. But I had another reason to call”, I answered.

“Oh? Did something happen?” David asked, surprised.

“Yeah… Mom just told me that she wasn't able to get me a tutor, but she got me transferred to another school that hopefully has more open and less violent people in it”, I told him.

“Oh, I’m sorry. But I hope changing schools helps”, David said.

“After all, you weren’t bullied in your current school either at first. Not until you started talking to me”, David reminded and halfway through his sentence, his voice got sadder.

“Oh yeah, I had almost forgotten that”, I said.

“Do you ever regret getting to know me?” David asked after being silent for a while.

“What?! Of course not!” I exclaimed, shocked. Why would I regret that? Getting to know David was probably the best decision I had ever made, even though it meant I ended up bullied again.

“But without me, you wouldn’t get beaten up almost every day and you wouldn’t have to change schools because of that”, David said, sounding sad.

“Yeah, but without you I wouldn’t have any friends. I think that’s even worse than being bullied”, I answered.

“You mean a lot to me and I’ll never regret getting to know you”, I continued.

There’s silence on the other side of the line and I have to check that it didn’t disconnect at some point.

“David?” I asked after a couple minutes of silence.

“I’m sorry, I don’t know what to say. You’re really important for me too”, he answered, making me feel warm inside.

“Good to hear”, I said and smiled at myself.

“But I’ll see you tomorrow? I gotta go do my homework”, I asked, just to make sure.

“Yeah, I’ll see you tomorrow”, David said. We said our goodbyes before ending the phone call.

After setting the phone on my desk and sitting on my desk chair, I took my school books out of my bag and started doing my homework.

*

A couple hours later I was laying on my bed, trying to go to sleep, but my thoughts were constantly running to David. I reminisced about the afternoon and evening that I had spent with him today. I found it really cute how he had been in my hug for the entire movie. At the park I had thought about telling him how I felt, but eventually chickened out. However, I had found courage to peck his cheek before going home, although I didn’t dare to look at how he reacted to it. If I had to guess, he was probably extremely surprised and confused about it. I didn’t know if he was going to bring it up and also I had no idea what he would think about it. But if he would bring it up that I kissed his cheek, I would probably just have to be honest about my feelings, even though there was a risk that he would never want to see me again. But there was also a small chance that he felt the same way. Even a thought about the fact that he might feel the same way about me caused a swarm of butterflies flying around in my stomach.
