Chapter 4. Here without you
I arrived in front of a big, red brick house with Linda. I had been there before, but I had completely forgotten how big her house was. We stepped out of the car before Linda opened the trunk of her car and we took all my stuff out. Linda locked her car and we started walking towards the front door with my bags. As we stepped into the house, I looked around in awe again in the huge hallway. I didn’t understand why she had such a big house when she lived alone. No wonder she agreed to let me live here, she probably won’t even notice me here in this giant house.
“I have something to tell you”, Linda said as I was taking off my shoes. I looked at her questioningly.
“I’ve hired you a tutor who will teach you here”, Linda said.
“What?!” I exclaimed, shocked.
“Yeah. A tutor. So you don’t have to go to school anymore”, she said, seeming surprised that I was shocked.
“But I want to go to school”, I said.
“Oh. I thought you were bullied. Your mother told me a long time ago”, Linda said, sounding confused now.
“Yeah, I am. But my only friend is there”, I said.
“You can meet him in your free-time. I just think it’s better if you study here, where you don’t get beaten up everyday. I’m just trying to think what’s best for you”, Linda said.
“Okay, yeah. I guess I understand. I just wouldn’t wanna leave Pierre alone at school”, I said and sighed.
“Your phone will be locked away during the night and your school day on weekdays and your curfew is at ten”, Linda said.
“What?!” I exclaimed again.
“So you’ll get enough sleep. Again I’m only thinking about your best”, Linda explained. I sighed. I wondered whether even the orphanage had less rules than Linda had. She seemed to have thought about everything in advance and it had only been a day since she found out my mom was dead.
“Oh yeah, and cursing is forbidden”, Linda added strictly. I wanted to roll my eyes, but that probably would’ve gotten me in trouble right away, so I restrained myself. Of course it was forbidden.
“Yeah, fine. Where’s my room?” I asked as I threw my guitar case on my shoulder and grabbed the bag I had at Pierre’s. Linda took my suitcase.
“Here”, she said and led me upstairs into one of the rooms.
“I already made the bed and I’ve redecorated this a little. I hope you like it”, Linda said.
“Yeah, it’s nice. Thank you”, I said as I set the bag and guitar case on the floor.
“No problem”, Linda said and left the room.
As soon as Linda had left, I closed the door, took my phone and searched Pierre’s number from the contacts.
“Oh, hi!” Pierre answered happily.
“Hey”, I said as my lips curved into a smile.
“How’s it going? Does Linda seem nice?” Pierre asked curiously.
“It’s okay, there’s just a couple things that I don’t like…”, I answered.
“What things?” Pierre asked.
“I’m not coming to school anymore ‘cause Linda got me a tutor that’s going to home school me so I wouldn’t get beaten up anymore, my curfew is at ten and my phone is gonna be locked away during week nights”, I answered.
“What the fuck? How am I gonna survive at school alone? I’m not going if you’re not there. With you I can stand getting beaten up sometimes, but not alone. They’re gonna kill me! I’ll ask my mom to get me a tutor too”, Pierre panicked.
“Yeah, you should ask. It seems like Linda has planned everything in advance and I don’t think I’ll be able to make her change her mind, especially about the school”, I said.
“Yeah. But otherwise how is it?” Pierre asked.
“Well, the house is really nice. It’s so big that Linda probably won’t even notice I’m here. I don’t understand why she needs this mansion when she lives alone”, I said.
“Well, that’s good. By the way, do you wanna come over tomorrow after school?” Pierre asked.
“Yeah, sure, but I have no idea what time my home school ends”, I answered.
“Well, you can let me know tomorrow”, Pierre said.
“Yeah, I’ll let you know”, I said.
“David!” I heard Linda yell at me from downstairs.
“I gotta go. I’ll call you tomorrow”, I said to Pierre.
We said our goodbyes and I hurried to the top of the stairs.
“Yeah?” I asked.
“Are you hungry?” Linda asked.
“Maybe a little”, I admitted.
“Okay. I’ll make you some sandwiches so you can come down to eat soon”, Linda said.
“Yeah, thank you”, I said.
I walked back into my room, although this time leaving the door open and took a better look at it. It was quite spacious. Viewed from the door, on the left by the wall there was a twin-bed and on the right there was a closet. On the opposite wall of the door there was a big window that had a view to the backyard and in front of the window there was a desk and a chair. In the middle of the room there was a soft, red carpet on the floor. I thought it was a pretty nice room.
“David, you can come eat now”, Linda yelled from downstairs. I walked out of the room, jumped down the stairs and went to the kitchen. I sat by the table and Linda brought some sandwiches in front of me.
“Thank you”, I said. Linda just smiled at me and sat on the opposite side of the table.
Pierre’s PoV.
After ending the phone call with David, I went downstairs where my parents were watching TV.
“Mom, can I get a tutor for home school?” I asked. Mom looked at me surprised.
“Why do you want to start home school?” she asked.
“‘Cause Linda got David a home school tutor so he wouldn’t get beaten up anymore and I don’t wanna be alone at school”, I answered.
“We’ll wait and see”, mom said.
“What the fuck? What are we waiting for? To see how badly I get beaten up without David?” I asked angrily.
“Pierre. Language”, dad said strictly.
“I don’t fucking care about the language. Just stay out of this, I wasn’t talking to you. You wouldn’t even give a shit if I was beaten up to death!” I yelled at my dad.
“Pierre, calm down”, mom said, looking shocked about my outburst.
“I can’t. I can’t go to school. They’re gonna kill me”, I said. Mom sighed.
“Please, Pierre. Can you do one week? If you go to school this week, then I can try and arrange your things”, mom asked.
“Okay, fine. But only this week. Then I’m not even setting foot in that school without David!” I said determinedly and stomped back into my room.
*
The next morning I didn’t want to wake up. I was scared of facing the bullies without David for the first time. But I would have to go. I promised to mom and if I broke that promise, she might not try to get me a tutor. Reluctantly I got up from my bed, went to a quick shower and put on my clothes. I drank a cup of coffee in the kitchen before leaving to the torture chamber, better known as school.
I managed to avoid the bullies for the first hours of school. On a lunch break I decided not to go to the cafeteria and instead went outside to sit on a bench and write lyrics in my notebook. However, I didn’t get to sit there alone long until my bullies came over to me.
“Here you are. We were starting to feel like you were avoiding us. Where’s your boyfriend?” one of them asked.
“He’s not my boyfriend and he doesn’t go to this school anymore”, I answered.
“Did he get bored with looking at your ugly face and fat body?” another one of them asked and the others laughed at that.
“It’s none of your business”, I snapped, instantly regretting it. I probably never should’ve answered anything in the first place.
“I guess we hit your sensitive spot”, one of them said. The bells rang and they started heading back to their classes. I sighed as I put my notebook away and got up from the bench. This would be a really long three and half days. Luckily I would see David today after school, I thought as I started heading to my class.
The rest of the day was as terrible as the lunch break. On every break after lunch, the bullies managed to find me and tell me that I was just a fat, ugly and disgusting gay that didn’t deserve to be loved. Usually I was able to ignore their words, but today I was feeling like shit and they just made it worse. I was feeling myself like they described me. As a cherry on a cake, as I’m leaving from school they decided to beat me. Luckily they got bored soon and finally left me alone. I got up from the ground and went to sit on the bench close to the school for a while. Suddenly my phone started ringing and David’s name was displayed on the screen. I instantly got a lot happier.
“Hey!” I answered.
“Hi, I got out of home school now”, David said.
“Okay, where do you wanna meet?” I asked.
“I could come to your place if it’s okay”, David suggested.
“Yeah, it’s okay”, I answered and smiled at myself.
“Cool, I’ll see you soon”, David said before we ended the phone call and I started heading home.
The doorbell rang almost immediately after I had gotten home from school. I practically ran to the front door and after opening it, I pulled David into a tight hug without thinking about it too much. After the terrible day at school, I just felt like I needed a hug.
“Hello for you too”, David said as he chuckled a bit confused about my sudden need for intimacy. I pulled away from the hug before letting him into the house.
David took off his shoes and followed me into my room.
“How did it go with the tutor?” I asked as we sat on my bed.
“It was okay. It’s just boring to listen to someone go on about something I couldn’t care less about and not be able to even do anything else at the same time ‘cause he would notice it right away. You know, since I’m the only student”, David said with a sigh.
“How did it go in the torture chamber?” David asked.
“Well, I managed to survive without physical torture for most of the day, but they seemed to enjoy torturing me mentally on almost every break”, I answered.
“Oh no. I’m sorry. I wish I could be there taking some of the torture so you wouldn’t have to suffer alone, but Linda has decided to protect me from everything. I tried to tell her that I didn’t want to leave you alone with the bullies, but she didn’t listen and just said that she doesn’t want me to get beaten up again and that she just wants to protect me”, David said with a sigh.
“Well, at least she seems to care about you since she doesn’t want you to get beaten up and wants to protect you”, I said comfortingly. Even though I had to suffer alone at school, I was happy for David that he had gotten away from the bullies. He had been bullied for so long that I thought he deserved to be pulled away from the suffering. He deserved to have a guardian that actually cared about how he was doing.
“I guess so”, David said.
“Luckily I can still see you after school”, he said and smiled at me. His smile made me feel like there were butterflies flying around in my stomach. He looked so insanely cute.
“Yeah, luckily”, I said, trying to ignore the butterflies.
“I asked my mom if I could get a tutor myself as well and she said she’ll try to find out if it’s possible, but I have to go to school for the rest of this week”, I said.
“Oh, that’s great if it works out”, David said. I nodded.
“Did you get some homework? Or how does home school work?” I asked.
“Yeah, I got something. Did you get any homework?” he answered.
“Yeah, I got a couple things to do”, I answered.
“Maybe we should do them now then?” David suggested. I nodded and took my books out of my schoolbag as David did the same.
We didn’t have a lot of homework so it didn’t take long to do them. Especially when we did them together.
“What do you wanna do now?” I asked David after we had put the books back into our school bags. He shrugged.
“I’m good with almost anything”, he said.
“Do you wanna watch a movie?” I suggested. He nodded and we headed to the living room.
We chose a comedy movie together and I put it on.
“Do you want something to eat or drink?” I asked.
“Maybe I could drink something”, David answered.
“Do you want coke?” I asked. David nodded and I headed into the kitchen. I poured coke into two glasses before going back to the living room. I gave one of the glasses to David before sitting next to him on the couch. David thanked me with a smile and I smiled back at him. His smile was so cute that I felt like my heart was melting. I didn’t really pay much attention to the movie as my thoughts were on the black haired boy that was watching the movie next to me. I couldn’t help myself, but I was starting to have a crush on him. Actually I think I already had a crush on him. When I wasn’t with him, I couldn’t stop thinking about him and how much I missed him and even when he was next to me, I was thinking about him. I also smiled a lot more than before. I felt like during the past two weeks I had smiled more than during most of my life before.
*
After the movie ended I went to take it out of the player and put it back to its place. My brothers had come home while we were watching the movie and soon my parents would be home too.
“Do you wanna go back upstairs or do you have to go?” I asked David.
“We can go upstairs. I don’t need to go yet. I told Linda that I was going to my friend’s place to do homework and I wouldn’t be back until nine or something”, David answered and smiled at me. I nodded and smiled at him before we started heading towards my room. We sat on my bed again like we had done earlier. Soon after that the front door opened downstairs as my parents came home.
“Can I walk you back to Linda’s later?” I asked.
“Yeah, sure”, David answered and smiled at me.
“Does she live far from here?” I asked.
“It’s about a mile away”, David answered. I nodded. It wasn’t too bad.
“Do you wanna listen to music?” I asked.
“Yeah, I’d like that”, David answered and smiled at me. I got up from my bed and put a Bad Religion record to the CD-player on my desk. As the first song started playing I went back to sit on my bed next to David.
We managed to listen to almost the whole record until mom yelled that the dinner was ready. I was surprised I was able to hear my mom over my singing. As we had been listening to the record, we had been talking about music and when we haven’t been talking, I had been singing along.
I paused the music before we started heading towards the kitchen where the rest of my family was already sitting by the table. We sat down as well and took the food on our plates.
David’s PoV.
“David, how have you settled at your aunt’s?” Pierre’s mom, Louise, asked as we had started eating. I was still trying to learn to call her by her name like she requested.
“Pretty well, I guess”, I answered and smiled at Louise.
“Good. I’m happy it worked out this way and you didn’t end up in an orphanage or something”, Louise said.
“Yeah, you’re right”, I agreed and sighed in relief as I remembered that that’s where I could’ve ended up if Linda didn’t want to take me to live with her. I guess Linda’s mansion was a hundred times better option than an orphanage. I should just be super kind to Linda so she wouldn’t throw me into an orphanage.
“You’re still always welcome to come here”, Louise said and smiled at me. I glanced at Pierre’s dad after that. He just continued eating expressionlessly and quietly without even glancing at our direction.
“Thank you, I appreciate that”, I said and smiled at Louise again.
After eating, we thanked Louise for the food and went back to Pierre’s room. Pierre put the Bad Religion record back on before we sat on his bed.
“Your mom is really nice”, I said to Pierre.
“Yeah, she is”, Pierre admitted.
“Even though she’s sometimes a bit too overprotective, but still”, he continued and smiled at me.
“Why don't I have relatives like that?” I asked a rhetorical question. Pierre shrugged.
“Do you think Linda would let you sleep over here?” he asked.
“I don’t know. I can ask. But she definitely won’t let me stay on a weekday ‘cause of home school and her rules”, I answered.
“Yeah, ask her”, Pierre said and I could hear excitement in his tone. Butterflies were flying around in my stomach as I thought about having a sleepover at Pierre’s.
“Yeah, I’ll ask”, I said and smiled at him. Pierre smiled back at me.
*
It was about half past eight when I informed Pierre that I should probably start heading “home”. Linda’s mansion didn’t feel like home to me so it was really hard for me to call it my home. I didn’t know if it ever even would feel like an actual home to me. Even Pierre’s home felt more like home to me.
“Okay, let’s go then”, Pierre said. He got up from his bed and started heading downstairs as I followed him.
Louise and Real were sitting in the living room, watching TV when we got downstairs. Pierre told them that he was going to walk me home and that he would be home before ten pm. Louise got up from the couch and came to give me a big hug.
“I’ll see you again, David”, she said as she pulled away from the hug. She also hugged Pierre and told him to be careful when he was coming back. I felt emotionally moved about Louise’s concerned behavior ‘cause it’s so adorable and I never really had that with my mom, but apparently Pierre is too used to it already.
“Yeah yeah”, he muttered as he pulled away from his mom’s hug and started putting on his shoes. I followed his example and after putting on my shoes, I grabbed my school bag.
We stepped out into chilling autumn weather. It was still warm enough so I was good with only a hoodie, but after all it was October so soon I would need to start wearing a jacket. We were talking about random stuff as we were walking towards Linda’s house and soon I noticed that we were standing in front of the familiar red brick house.
“We’re here”, I said a bit sadly.
“You wanna meet again tomorrow?” Pierre asked, probably noticing the sad tone in my voice.
“Yeah, I’d like that”, I said and smiled at him.
“What would you say if we went to a cinema tomorrow?” Pierre suggested.
“Yeah, sounds good. I just don’t know what time my home school is going to end tomorrow. At least today it ended at three, so maybe it’ll end at three tomorrow too, but I can call you after”, I answered.
“Yeah, sounds good. I’ll see you tomorrow, David”, Pierre said and pulled me into a hug. I felt butterflies start flying around in my stomach again as we hugged. The hug was quite long, it was as if Pierre wouldn’t want to let me go. Of course, I didn’t mind, I could've stayed there hugging Pierre for forever. However, eventually he pulled away from the hug.
“See you tomorrow”, I said and smiled at him before turning around and starting to head towards the house.
“Remember to walk home carefully”, I reminded him as I had walked a few steps towards the house.
“Yeah yeah, mom”, he said with a grin.
“See you tomorrow!” he exclaimed before he started walking towards his home.
I looked at his diverging back as he was walking away for a moment before continuing to walk to Linda’s house.
I opened the door and stepped in.
“Hello, I’m back”, I exclaimed in the empty hallway as I was taking my shoes off.
Linda appeared into the hallway from the kitchen.
“Hey, David. Are you hungry?” she asked. I shook my head.
“No, I’m good. Thanks for asking”, I answered. Linda nodded.
“I’m gonna go to my room”, I said and started heading upstairs.
In my room I sat on my bed and decided to play my guitar for a while. As I started playing my guitar, I also started thinking about Pierre.
I wondered if he had written any new songs. Probably he had some songs that he had written a long time ago, but hadn’t shown me. Maybe I should ask him about it sometime. I wondered how boring my life would be without Pierre. All the bad things that had been happening in my life lately had only brought me and Pierre closer to each other. In a short period of time, he had become one of the most important people in my life, maybe even most important. Still I hoped we could be even more close than we already were. I was having a huge crush on him, but I was too scared to tell him how I felt ‘cause I was worried he wouldn’t feel the same way towards me. I couldn’t afford to lose my only friend. I would probably go crazy if I had to spend all my time at Linda’s.
I stopped playing as I heard a knock on the door.
“Yeah?” I asked. Linda opened the door.
“Should you go to sleep?” Linda asked. I glanced at the clock. It was already ten pm. Time had gone by so fast as I was playing guitar lost in my thoughts. I nodded. I looked at my phone for the last time. There weren't any messages, but I decided quickly to send a text message for Pierre before giving my phone away to Linda. She thanked me and wished me good night before walking away from my room and closing the door behind her.
I went to the bathroom, took off my clothes and went to shower. After the shower I brushed my teeth and changed into clean boxers and a t-shirt before going to bed and almost immediately falling asleep.
Pierre’s PoV.
I arrived home around half past nine. After taking off my shoes, I ate a sandwich, took a shower and brushed my teeth. Now I was just laying in bed. Suddenly my phone beeped as a sign of a text message. I took my phone and noticed that the message was from David. A smile appeared on my face as I noticed it.
“I have to give my phone away now. I hope you got home safely. Thanks for today, I had a fun afternoon and evening. I can’t wait for tomorrow”, the message said. I couldn’t help, but keep smiling. That was so cute.
“I had a fun time with you too. I’ll see you tomorrow (or today when you see this message). I can’t wait for tomorrow either”, I answered even though I knew David couldn’t see it right away.
I put my phone away and laid my head against my pillow. Soon I fell asleep and saw a dream that had David in the leading role.
