WARNINGS: talk of death
On August 19, 2000, I got the worst news of my life.

The world crashed down around her with those two little words--"brain dead."
The room began to spin, the doctor's words growing garbled and unidentifiable as her brain fought to comprehend--"brain dead."
"This isn't happening," she thought over and over, her heart racing, panic setting in. She found breathing hard, seeing hard, hearing hard, continuing to live hard--"brain dead."
Someone touched her shoulder, and it was too much. She ran from the room not seeing where she was but knowing where she was heading--"brain dead."
She slammed and locked the heavy bathroom door with a loud click then gripped the sink with white knuckles. She willed the Earth to quit spinning, to stop this day from continuing--"brain dead."
Slowly, she slid to the floor, her arms wrapped around her body in a futile attempt at comfort. They weren't the arms she wanted, though. Those days were over with the sound of those two words...
Brain dead.
Her mother would never hug her again. And she cried because it was all she could do.
