Erica's graduation from PCC was last night. I had two other conflicts, both parties, but I let them both pass at the chance to be there for her. It was amazing - almost as exciting as when Jonathan graduated from high school. Erica was the only graduate I knew, yet I felt myself swept up in these families' proud moment; for they were celebrating someone's hard work. Year or years of hard work. Most of them struggling to get through... to get by.
The class speaker was a 49-year-old returning student, working full-time, studying full-time as a single mom who lost everything in the recession. She has two learning disabilities and still worked her ass off to graduate with a transfer degree at a 3.06 gpa. She's moving onto PSU to get her BS in Psych. That is some serious dedication and determination.
I may not be the brightest, but I am tenacious, curious, and eager. I'll get my degree. But, in my own time on my own terms, with or without a team to support me through.
