If you pay $2.00 extra for the wash, you'll get back $1.10 in gas savings. So you'll be paying $.90 extra.

You'd need a 20 gallon tank to make them equal.

To answer question #3, if you're getting 12 gallons of gas for:

(3.43 * 12) - 3.00 = $38.16

then you need to work 190.8 minutes to pay for that, or 3 hours, 10 minutes, 48 seconds per week going to pay just for the gas to get to work. Which means if you're working a 40 hour week, 7.9% of your time is going to pay for gas, or about 40 minutes of your 8 hour day.

So, circle some time on your daily planner, and celebrate your Oil Dependency Two-Thirds Hour every day!

Of course, you went and presented unreal numbers, so my elegant math is probably useless.

But if I dump all this into an Excel spreadsheet and use your elegant math, then I can change the gas prices and my take-home pay whenever I need to, so I have the most up-to-date info! ;-)

I've been reliably informed by my sources that this is a fully prudent and rational step to take, and not weird at all. :-P
