(Please note, some of the numbers below have been changed to protect the not-so-innocent. Ask me why I now own a whip. ;-)
I need a car wash and a tank of gas. I normally get a $3 wash and gas at my favorite station, where it's $3.43 a gallon. However, gas at the local gas-and-wash is 10c cheaper per gallon if I get a $5 wash. If I need 11 gallons of gas:
1. Is it cheaper for me to go to my $3 wash and my favorite station, or to the gas-and-wash?
2. How many gallons of gas would I have to buy to make the two equal?
3. If my take home pay is $12/hour, and I have to fill my 12 gallon tank once a week to get to and from work, how many hours do I have to work just to pay for my gas (assuming I use the option that's cheapest in #1)?
