Some of the joys of home ownership are in the little discoveries about the property after you've settled in a bit. That nest of baby birds, or the animal burrow, or the pretty rocks.

I have a chestnut tree.

It's on the property line between the Green Monster and the next-door neighbor, and it's huge. It stands taller than our three-story house ( Read more... )

Thanks for the heads-up. It is, in fact, a horse chestnut; that pod is unmistakable. Explains why the bit of one I tried to eat was so damn bitter. I'll toss the rest out.

That chestnut tree is going to be a serious pain... I had a friend who had one that dropped them all over the driveway. Driveway: easy to clean.
Lawn: not as easy.
Overhanging where people are and the spiky husk falls on you: ouch!

I got so upset at their neighbor who cut off all the branches overhanging their lawn. It was also a really nice old tree and they pretty much killed it doing that.

awesome! you can use them to wash white clothes and it's like using blueing, according to the article.
